Job Summary

The University of New Mexico is seeking a tenure-track Assistant Professor of Viola to join the Department of Music. This is an exciting opportunity for a highly qualified and experienced viola pedagogue to contribute to the growth and development of our music program.

Responsibilities
  • Teach applied viola lessons, chamber music, and other courses as needed to undergraduate and graduate students.
  • Teach courses related to string instrument technique and repertoire.
  • Assist the UNM Orchestras and support the String Pedagogy and Music Education programs.
  • Organize and implement string area initiatives that engage music students and music teachers throughout the state of New Mexico and beyond.
Qualifications
  • A Master's degree in Viola Performance or a related field.
  • At least 5 years' applied teaching experience as a viola instructor, with a minimum of 3 years of teaching at the collegiate level.
Preferred Qualifications
  • A Doctorate in Viola Performance or a related field.
  • Demonstrated expertise as a viola pedagogue and a record of excellence in applied teaching.
  • Experience teaching other relevant string-related courses, such as conducting, chamber music, orchestral excerpts, string pedagogy, string technique, and string repertoire.
  • Excellent technical and expressive skills as a performer.
  • An emerging or established national and/or international performance career.
  • A continued commitment to scholarship and a vision for future creative work and/or performance activity.
  • Demonstrated success in student recruiting.
  • A demonstrated commitment to diversity, equity, inclusion, and student success.
  • Demonstrated leadership and organizational skills.

Quarter-finalists will be contacted to submit additional materials, including names, addresses, phone numbers, and e-mail addresses of 3-5 professional references, and hyperlinks to video recordings of the candidate teaching two viola students of different levels.

Semi-finalists will be asked to participate in a phone or video interview.

Finalists will be invited to the University of New Mexico to interview with the Search Committee, the Chair of the Department of Music, and the Dean of the College of Fine Arts, as well as have the chance to meet with students and faculty.

The finalists will perform a short recital and hold an open masterclass with students.
