Welcome to WVU Medicine, where we're dedicated to providing exceptional patient care. We're seeking a skilled Patient Care Assistant to join our team in the Emergency Services department.

This role involves performing nonprofessional direct and indirect patient care activities, including personal, physical, and comfort needs of patients, under the supervision of a registered professional nurse.

As a Patient Care Assistant, you'll provide high-quality patient care in coordination with licensed medical staff, observing and reporting all patient concerns/changes in condition to a registered nurse immediately.

Key responsibilities include:

  • Assisting the Registered Nurse with admission, transfer, discharge, and general patient care duties.
  • Recording vital signs, assisting in personal hygiene, and other patient comfort measures.
  • Assisting in specimen collection and other activities of assigned patients.
  • Maintaining a clean and safe environment to help prevent and/or control infections and to provide for the safety of patients, visitors, and employees.
  • Reporting all necessary equipment repairs to appropriate personnel according to departmental procedure in a timely manner.
  • Preparing patients for examinations and diagnostic procedures according to departmental procedure.
  • Communicating with RN regarding any nutrition issues, such as poor appetite or verbalized lack of understanding of diet changes.
  • Assisting department with administrative tasks to support department operations.
  • Answering patient call bell and relaying message to appropriate personnel.

Physical demands of this role include heavy/hard work, requiring strength and/or stamina, lifting, moving, stooping, reaching, standing, and walking.

Working closely with others, working protracted or irregular hours, working around biohazards, working around infectious diseases, working with or near the deceased, working with hands in water, and working with electrical hazards associated with patient care equipment are also essential aspects of this role.
