Library Services Coordinator - Adult Engagement Specialist

FULL-TIME REGULAR

Starting annual salary $31,200 ($15.00 an hour)

PRIMARY OBJECTIVE:
This role encompasses a range of significant, professional library responsibilities, including: 1) strategizing, organizing, and executing workforce development initiatives, career advancement programs, skills enhancement, and job search assistance; 2) designing and delivering computer literacy workshops; aiding library users with inquiries at public computer stations and, when feasible, through online or email support; collaborating with the director and team to enhance and promote the library's digital resources; 3) facilitating Makerspace activities; and 4) strategizing, organizing, and executing community sustainability and resilience initiatives. This position provides library services to adults, including circulation support, reference services, reader's advisory, programming, community engagement, and collection development; collaborates with staff to assess and improve adult services; assists in the promotion and marketing of adult services and other library programs for the community. Operates under the guidance of the Library Director and Assistant Director. Responsibilities are carried out with independent judgment and initiative, adhering to the policies of the City of Belen Public Library and applicable state laws.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Adheres to the policies and procedures established by the City of Belen.
  • Designs, promotes, and implements a variety of employment readiness skills and resources, focusing on job search strategies, career planning, and skills development, particularly for the unemployed and veterans.
  • Creates and conducts various basic computer skills training sessions for the public, staff, city employees, and local businesses or non-profits, either in-person or virtually.
  • Offers non-technical support to library patrons utilizing public computers, printers, and copiers, or addressing computer-related inquiries in person or via email, in collaboration with the Computer Specialist.
  • Promotes the library's digital resources to the public, government, and business sectors through informational materials, social media, and online content.
  • Develops, promotes, and implements workshops, DIY resources, and other initiatives aimed at enhancing the sustainability and resilience of patrons and communities within the library's service area.
  • Advocates for the library's educational resources for adults that improve job readiness and employment prospects, including trades, professional development, and small business support.
  • Collaborates with the director to promote resources that align with city and local business objectives for workforce, community, and economic development.
  • Participates in necessary training and workshops related to libraries, entrepreneurship, sustainability, DIY skills, and other educational programs as recommended by the Library Director.
  • Supports the Circulation Services Librarian by maintaining patron confidentiality, library card records, and the member database; managing the check-out and return of library materials; and assisting with reservations and renewals.
  • Engages with community organizations within the library's service area to ensure effective communication and collaboration for programs and events both inside and outside the library. In partnership with colleagues and interested staff and patrons, develops programs that connect the library to community groups.
  • Conducts interviews with patrons to ascertain information needs; determines appropriate search strategies; provides answers to routine and complex reference inquiries in both print and electronic formats.
  • Addresses patron complaints and resolves issues.
  • Plans, schedules, and organizes library services for infrequent users or non-users, including traditionally underserved populations such as low-income individuals, ethnic minorities, older adults, adult new and non-readers, veterans, incarcerated individuals, and people with disabilities.
  • Must work independently and complete tasks according to established schedules.
  • Must be available for evening and weekend work as required.
  • Carefully selects resources to enhance the adult library collections, utilizing professional reviews and adhering to the Library's Collection Development policy.
  • Ensures high-quality customer service and compliance with state laws and regulations, as well as the American Library Association's standards.
  • Staffs public service desks and evening/weekend programming as necessary.
  • Maintains and reports accurate data regarding patrons, programs, and services through both online and manual systems.
  • Continuously promotes the importance of literacy and reading, emphasizing reading as a lifelong skill.
  • Creates promotional materials for the library, including flyers and social media content.
  • Develops and enhances skills to effectively engage with diverse populations.
  • Establishes and maintains professional and respectful working relationships with colleagues, supervisors, other city personnel, and the public.
  • Assists at other library locations as needed.
  • Performs additional duties as assigned and participates in cross-training for various library functions.

QUALIFICATIONS:
  • Exceptional oral and written communication skills, including public speaking, as well as strong tutoring and listening abilities, with the capacity to effectively engage with individuals of all ages and backgrounds.
  • Comprehensive knowledge of workforce development and community sustainability.
  • Proficient understanding of computing devices, including tablets and smartphones, word processing, spreadsheets, presentation software, databases, general software applications, operating systems, and the Internet, including effective use of email and search engines, as well as evaluating websites and online safety.
  • Demonstrates enthusiasm and patience when working with workshop participants and computer users of varying ages and skill levels.
  • Equivalent to the completion of a four-year accredited college degree in education, library science, natural or social sciences, or related fields, along with relevant life experience.
  • Able to develop proficiency with library computer systems and social media platforms.
  • Able to assess the reference needs of the community and select suitable resources.
  • Comfortable with fast-paced multitasking.
  • Able to work effectively with diverse populations.
  • Able to organize and execute work functions independently and complete daily tasks according to established schedules with minimal supervision.
  • Spanish proficiency is preferred.
  • Must successfully pass a drug test and background check.
  • Possesses a valid driver's license.


EQUIPMENT USED:
Knowledge of common office equipment, including typewriters, computers, calculators, copiers, faxes, and telephones.
