The Infection Control Specialist is responsible for overseeing the Infection Prevention and Control Program, aimed at preventing and managing the spread of infections and outbreaks. This role involves implementing strategies to mitigate risks associated with hospital-acquired infections (HAIs) and monitoring transmissible diseases, ensuring compliance with reporting requirements to local, state, and federal authorities.

Key Responsibilities:

  1. Technical Expertise

· Maintain and update NHSN modules on current definitions of HAIs.

· Oversee data entry into NHSN for public reporting and internal leadership purposes.

· Conduct surveillance and review infection cases to identify opportunities for improving patient care.

· Provide data insights and recommendations to relevant leadership and healthcare teams.

· Monitor hand hygiene compliance and provide educational support.

· Track and report transmissible diseases to appropriate authorities as mandated.

· Develop, implement, and revise infection control policies and procedures to ensure adherence to established standards.

· Collaborate with project managers on infection control risk assessments related to construction and renovation projects.

· Perform audits of the healthcare environment to identify and address infection control lapses.

· Assist in coordinating the annual Infection Control Risk Assessment for strategic planning and disease management.

· Based on the annual risk assessment, contribute to the development of the Infection Control Program plan and establish objectives.

Qualifications:

Education and Experience

* Associate degree in Nursing or a related health field.

* Completed post-secondary education in a health-related discipline, including laboratory technology or public health.

* Bachelor’s degree in Nursing, Allied Health, or Public Health preferred.

* RN or MT(ASCP)/MLS(ASCP) certification required for nursing and clinical laboratory professionals.

* Minimum of one year of experience in a healthcare setting.

* Certification in Infection Control or eligibility to obtain within three years of hire, with recertification every five years.

* Current licensure to practice in the State of North Carolina.
