Position Overview:

This role necessitates a comprehensive understanding and active engagement in fulfilling the mission of our medical center.

The Surgical Support Specialist II is tasked with providing surgical assistance in a secure, suitable, and effective manner under the supervision of a Registered Nurse or Physician, adhering to the standards of practice for this role.

It is outside the scope of practice for the Surgical Support Specialist II to perform tasks beyond their defined responsibilities (e.g., patient assessment, evaluation of patient data, medication administration), even if requested by a Surgeon.

Key Responsibilities:

Responsibilities include, but are not limited to:

  • Ensuring the availability and maintenance of surgical instruments.
  • Adhering to aseptic techniques.
  • Possessing advanced knowledge of surgical procedures.
  • Understanding anatomy and physiology.
  • Facilitating patient flow within the department.

Provides support and communicates effectively with the surgical team and supervisory personnel. This position requires proficient oral communication and participation in documentation processes.

Additionally, this role collaborates with other professional disciplines to ensure safe and effective patient care delivery and the achievement of desired patient outcomes.

  • Demonstrates knowledge of the clinical information system and applies principles to patient documentation.
  • Acts as a role model and assists new staff members or students.
  • Serves as a mentor for new employees/students in the scrub role.
  • Maintains confidentiality of all medical, financial, and other sensitive information that may jeopardize the privacy of patients and employees.
  • Utilizes strong customer service skills by managing and acknowledging patient-family expectations.
  • Demonstrates tact, sensitivity, and discretion.
  • Integrates knowledge of job-specific competencies.
  • Exhibits punctuality and reliability.
  • Adheres to company policies, procedures, and directives.
  • Interacts positively and constructively.
  • Meets the on-call requirements of the department.
  • Prioritizes and multitasks effectively.

Placement in the pay range is based on various factors, including relevant years of experience and qualifications.

In addition to base pay, there may be additional compensation available for this role, including shift differentials, extra shift incentives, and bonus opportunities.

Qualifications

Minimum Requirements:

Qualifications/Work Experience

  • Proficient in scrubbing a minimum of 4 specialties required.
  • 2 years of acute care surgical technician experience and CST surgical scrub technician certification required, OR 10 years of acute care surgical technician experience required.
  • Experience with computer systems, internet, order entry, and word processing preferred.
  • Proficient in medical terminology.
Education/Licensure/Certification

  • Graduation from a surgical scrub technician program, armed services training program, or equivalent training required.
  • Current American Heart Association Basic Cardiac Life Support Card required.
