Healthcare Access Specialist

We are seeking a highly skilled and detail-oriented Patient Care Coordinator to join our team at UnitedHealth Group. As a Patient Care Coordinator, you will play a critical role in ensuring the smooth operation of our healthcare services.
Key Responsibilities- Insurance Verification: Verify patient insurance coverage and benefits to ensure accurate information and needs are met in advance of service.
- Customer Service: Provide excellent customer service to patients, providers, and other departments, ensuring a positive experience.
- Demographic and Insurance Information: Collect and update patient demographic and insurance information, making changes as necessary to ensure accuracy.
- Precertification and Authorizations: Verify precertification and authorizations for scheduled services using internet sites, payer contacts, and software as appropriate.
- Assessing Coverage and Benefits: Assess coverage and benefits, and accurately determine patient responsibility as applicable.
- Self-Pay Patients: Identify self-pay patients and share information with financial counseling for assistance with patient financial obligation and options.
- Collaboration with Clinical Teams: Partner closely with clinical, office, billing, and registration teams to review authorizations timely, as applicable.
- Documentation: Appropriately document all conversations with insurance companies and healthcare facilities that pertain to authorizations or payment of services.
- Escalation: Escalate questions or concerns to leadership as needed.
- Knowledge and Productivity: Maintain and exhibit a current knowledge of insurance plans, associated workflows, and information, and the impact of this role within the revenue cycle. Remain aware of department productivity expectations and meet/exceed individual contributions to the team performance.
- Revenue Maximization: Strive to maximize revenue and minimize bad debt.
- Environmental Safety: Maintain a safe environment complying with NLH policies and procedures, reporting and directly addressing environmental hazards and violations of patient safety policy and/or protocol when involved or observed.
- Education: High School Diploma/GED (or higher)
- Experience: 6+ months of experience in an office setting, customer service setting (over the phone or face-to-face), phone support role, or call center environment
- Skills: Intermediate level of proficiency with Microsoft Office products
- Health and Safety: Influenza vaccination for the current flu season (typically August-May) or commitment to receive the influenza vaccination when available for the upcoming flu season
- Overnight Experience: Prior experience working an overnight schedule
- Patient Access Experience: 1+ years of Patient Access experience in a hospital or medical setting
- Medical Terminology: Understanding of medical terminology
- Insurance Knowledge: Working knowledge of insurance policies, procedures, and patient care settings
