Department of Veteran Affairs is seeking a dedicated leader for the role of Section Chief in Eye Care Services. With the current Section Chief retiring, this position presents a unique opportunity to shape the future of eye care within the Department of Veteran Affairs. The Eye Section is fully integrated, comprising ophthalmologists, optometrists, low vision specialists, nurse case managers, nursing personnel, and administrative support staff. Comprehensive technician support, on-site laser facilities, and optical shops are available across the region.

This leadership position offers a remarkable chance to foster growth and exhibit management skills. Key responsibilities include overseeing various Eye Clinic locations throughout Northern California, supervising two Site Chiefs based in Martinez and Sacramento, and spearheading program development and recruitment for the newly established Stockton VA Eye Clinic. Furthermore, you will play a pivotal role in the creation of a new, standalone two-story Eye Clinic in Sacramento. Administrative responsibilities will involve clinic oversight, policy formulation, strategic planning for long-term Eye Care delivery, and collaboration with other medical departments within our organization. This role also includes providing care for veterans in outpatient settings and surgical environments, along with the potential to supervise ophthalmology residents from UC Davis.

Essential qualifications include:

  • US Citizenship or Permanent Resident Alien status
  • Board Eligible/Certified in Ophthalmology
  • Possession of a full, unrestricted medical license in any State
  • Proof of vaccination for seasonal influenza and COVID-19

Work Schedule: This is a full-time position primarily involving day shifts from Monday to Friday, 8:00 AM to 4:30 PM, with home call and shared on-call responsibilities. Initial calls will be managed by residents, with attending physicians available for support as needed.

Travel: Minimal travel is expected for this role.

Education Debt Reduction Program (Student Loan Repayment): Eligible for up to $200,000 over five years, with a maximum of $40,000 per year.
