Position Overview:


The Surgical Technology Specialist collaborates with a multidisciplinary team to support the Surgeon(s) during both invasive and non-invasive procedures, which encompass diagnostic, therapeutic, interventional, and open surgical operations.

This role involves performing tasks in alignment with established performance standards. The individual is accountable for engaging in and fulfilling all patient safety initiatives relevant to the position. Furthermore, the incumbent conducts all responsibilities in accordance with the Mission and Values of Central Maine Healthcare.

Key Responsibilities:
Exhibits decision-making skills that reflect knowledge and sound judgment within the Surgical Technologist's scope of practice.


Operates proficiently as the primary or secondary Surgical Technologist during surgical procedures, assisting the surgeon throughout.

Maintains up-to-date knowledge and skills regarding procedures, instruments, equipment, and surgeon preferences.

Verifies all necessary equipment/instruments before each procedure to ensure optimal functionality.

Assists in the positioning, preparation, and draping of patients for surgical interventions.

Scrubs in and aids the Surgeon with the manipulation of catheters and guidewires.

Consults with the attending surgeon as needed to procure specific additional items for the planned procedure.

Anticipates the needs of the surgeon during the intraoperative phase.

Prepares and drapes patients following aseptic techniques.

Implements medical/surgical asepsis during procedures.

Collaborates with the RN to verify medications, including name, dosage, and expiration; labels all medications on the sterile field in accordance with CMH policy.

Ensures the appropriate functioning of all supplies and equipment within the Operating Rooms.

Responsible for the removal of all special and reusable materials post-procedure and for cleaning in line with Infection Control policies.


Accurately performs operating room counts (instruments, sponges, needles); adheres to proper procedures in case of discrepancies; reports all inconsistencies to the Circulating Nurse and surgeon and/or resolves immediately.

Demonstrates accountability for the care of instruments/equipment during the intra/postoperative phases, including the cleaning of instruments.

Makes informed decisions regarding assigned cases and the instruments/trays to be prepared for procedures.

Consults with the Surgical Team Leader to consolidate instrumentation/equipment required for procedures.

Regularly collaborates with other surgical team members to maintain equipment and supplies for surgical operations.

Prepares the surgical room promptly with all anticipated instruments, sutures, supplies, and equipment for each specific surgical procedure.

Adheres to aseptic techniques when opening sterile supplies and setting up for procedures.

Sets up, scrubs, and prepares for procedures 15-45 minutes prior to the scheduled time, unless otherwise directed.

Verifies informed consent, surgical site, and patient identification verbally with the surgeon and RN.

Maintains a safe environment for patients, colleagues, and self, in accordance with CMH policies and procedures.

Consults with other staff members when uncertain or unfamiliar with equipment or procedures.

Demonstrates competence in the care of specimens and handles specimens accurately at all times.


Assists with the cleaning and preparation of the surgical rooms between procedures and after cases; restocks supplies as necessary and organizes effectively for end-of-case cleanup.


Follows established procedures for steam sterilization; understands responsibilities and the necessity for chemical and biological monitoring, ensuring the sterility of flash autoclaved items through proper use of flash autoclave indicators for each processed load, and adheres to tracking procedures.

Demonstrates knowledge of emergency evacuation protocols concerning patient care initiated in response to unsafe environmental situations.

Establishes and maintains effective communication and a positive working relationship with colleagues for the benefit of the patient.

Treats patients and their families with respect and dignity, addressing psychosocial, cultural, ethnic, and religious/spiritual needs.

Adapts procedures to meet the individual needs of adolescent, adult, and geriatric patients.

Maintains a foundational understanding of individualized care specific to normal growth and development across age groups.

Acts as a role model consistently. Supervises, precepts, and mentors new staff.

Alerts appropriate licensed personnel when patients express discomfort.

Provides patients with explanations and verbal reassurance as necessary.


Conducts all aspects of patient care in an environment that maximizes patient safety and minimizes the likelihood of medical/health care errors.

Respects patient privacy and sensitivities; closely monitors patients with minimal disturbance.

Maintains self-accountability practices for additional responsibilities to enhance patient safety.

Customer Service:

Interacts with all individuals consistently, providing attention, support, and assistance to foster an environment of exceptional personal service.


Maintains a pleasant and helpful demeanor, presenting a professional appearance toward all internal and external customers at all times.

Proactively engages with individuals who may not be direct customers of the employee (e.g., assists patients who appear lost in finding their way).


Takes appropriate actions to recover from service difficulties, ensuring necessary steps are taken to resolve customer issues.

Demonstrates a commitment to service through consistent attendance and punctuality, scheduling absences according to departmental requirements, and incurring unplanned absences only when unavoidable circumstances arise.


Education and Experience:
Graduate of an accredited Surgical Technologist program.

Required certification for surgical technologists within one (1) year of employment.

Must maintain approved national certification through completion of CEU requirements or testing.

Current American Heart Association Healthcare Provider BLS certification required.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
Able to communicate effectively in English, both verbally and in writing.

Strong written and verbal communication skills.

Additional languages are preferred.

Basic computer proficiency.
