Position Summary:

The Recovery Support Specialist will deliver non-clinical assistance aimed at helping patients initiate their recovery journey from substance use challenges. Collaborating with a multidisciplinary team at a MedStar Health Facility, this role provides peer encouragement and motivation to individuals pursuing treatment for substance use disorders. The specialist will assist in coordinating referrals to treatment options and crafting service plans that facilitate successful connections to necessary resources. Services will be rendered within the MedStar Health Facility or Emergency Department, accompanied by appropriate follow-up.


Key Responsibilities:

  • Serve as a peer support resource throughout the patient's hospital stay and post-discharge, helping to achieve recovery goals. Act as a consultant to clinical team members regarding recovery support.
  • Aid patients and their families in navigating community services effectively. Assist in connecting patients with community support and substance treatment services, including scheduling appointments and arranging transportation.
  • Complete necessary documentation and reports, ensuring communication with the patient's nursing staff prior to visits.
  • Conduct brief interventions for patients who screen positive for substance use, and collaborate with nursing and social work staff as needed.
  • Assess patients' histories regarding substance use, treatment experiences, and readiness for change, employing motivational interviewing techniques to encourage behavior modification. Demonstrate coping strategies and self-help methods.
  • Provide family members with resources for recovery support. Engage in follow-up outreach via telephone to maintain connections and ongoing peer support. Verify patient attendance at appointments with treatment providers and follow up with those who miss appointments.

Qualifications:

  • High School Diploma or GED is required.
  • Must be actively involved in a personal recovery program, with a minimum of three years of sustained abstinence from substance use.
  • Peer Recovery Specialist certification is preferred within a specified timeframe.
