Key Responsibilities:

As a Microbiology Technician I, you will be responsible for performing waived, moderate, or highly complex tests authorized by CLIA. Your role will include:

  1. Adhering to laboratory protocols for the collection, processing, analysis, and reporting of patient test results.
  2. Following established quality control policies and documenting corrective actions when test systems deviate from performance specifications.
  3. Identifying issues that may impact test performance and notifying the appropriate supervisor or director.
  4. Conducting a variety of microbiology procedures requiring independent judgment in both manual and automated testing methods.
  5. Performing testing procedures in other departmental areas as licensed and competent.
  6. Maintaining instruments and equipment through regular maintenance schedules.
  7. Reviewing the accuracy of patient results prior to reporting.
  8. Recognizing age-specific differences in expected results across all age groups.
  9. Ensuring proficiency testing samples are handled in the same manner as patient samples.
  10. Possibly performing venipuncture or capillary puncture on patients of various ages.
  11. Assisting in the development and maintenance of laboratory policies and procedures.
  12. Adhering to all departmental and hospital policies related to safety, infection control, and emergency preparedness.
  13. Taking on supervisory responsibilities in the microbiology department when required.
  14. Other tasks as assigned by the department manager or director.

Qualifications:

Education and Work Experience:

  1. Current and valid state Clinical Laboratory Scientist license or limited state Clinical Laboratory Scientist license as a Microbiology Specialist, if required.
  2. CLS/MT generalist with one year of microbiology experience or Microbiologist Specialist preferred.
  3. Bachelor's Degree in chemical, physical, biological science, or Medical Laboratory Technology from an accredited institution, or other educational requirements as specified in CLIA.
