The Medical Technician position is a critical role in the Pathology and Laboratory Medicine Service, Veteran Health Administration. As a Medical Technician, you will be responsible for performing a range of technical functions in a clinical laboratory, including blood-drawing procedures, assisting patients, and specimen processing.
Key Responsibilities- Provides technical assistance to health and medical personnel in the diagnosis or treatment of patient illnesses or medical conditions.
- Performs diagnostic tests and procedures, including taking and labeling specimens for the laboratory, adhering to safety and infection control protocols.
- Positions patients for procedures, securing their confidence and cooperation, and explaining the procedures in a courteous manner.
- Maintains control records and documents test results, verifying the accuracy and completeness of requests, and interacting with hospital personnel to correct discrepancies.
- Receives and relays incoming telephone calls and messages, providing general or basic information.
- Maintains the laboratory facilities and equipment, controlling supplies, and ensuring no outdated supplies are left on the shelves.
- Supports testing and examination procedures by coordinating the general flow of specimens from the phlebotomy area to the individual sections of the laboratory.
- Experience performing phlebotomy/blood draws on human patients.
- English Language Proficiency: must be proficient in basic written and spoken English.
- One year of specialized experience equipped with the knowledge, skills, and abilities to perform the duties of the position.
The physical demands of this position include standing for long periods of time and walking, with some bending, lifting, and carrying light items. Above-average agility and dexterity are required.
