Pathology Assistant

We are seeking a highly skilled Pathology Assistant to join our team at the Detroit Medical Center. As a key member of our laboratory team, you will be responsible for performing a variety of tasks related to specimen processing, testing, and quality control.
Key Responsibilities- Assist in training staff on anatomic pathology and specimen processing policies and procedures.
- Enforce and comply with departmental safety policies and procedures, including the use of personal protective equipment.
- Prioritize incoming specimens and process patient specimens using specialized techniques.
- Set up and maintain designated work areas and equipment, ensuring that equipment is operational for appropriate use.
- Collaborate with staff and pathologists for all anatomic pathology processes, including labeling specimens, vials, and slides, and programming and loading imagers, stainers, and other equipment.
- Generate labels and attach them to specimens according to pre-established test requirements.
- Ensure specimen integrity by verifying patient identification and assigning accession numbers to all specimens.
- Prepare specimens to be sent to reference labs according to pre-established test requirements and record incoming results onto appropriate logs.
- Maintain daily records, including specimen logs/worksheets, send outs, and special procedure logs, and input data for workload.
- Clean equipment and small instruments, perform simple inspection and maintenance of laboratory equipment, and conduct routine quality control checks on equipment.
- Prepare solutions and reagents in accordance with pre-established guidelines.
- Perform a variety of clerical duties, including answering the telephone, scheduling, maintaining records, referencing inquiries from other departments, communicating with external staff or sources, and relaying messages to the appropriate personnel.
- High school diploma or equivalent required; associate's or bachelor's degree in a related field preferred.
- 1-2 years of experience in a laboratory setting, preferably in anatomic pathology.
- Strong knowledge of laboratory procedures and safety protocols.
- Excellent communication and teamwork skills.
- Ability to work independently with minimal supervision.
