Pathologists' Assistant

Job Summary
Under the general direction of a pathologist, the Pathologists' Assistant will assist in all aspects of anatomic pathology. This role requires a high level of expertise in surgical specimen dissection and analysis, as well as excellent communication and teamwork skills.
Key Responsibilities
- Perform dissection and dictate gross description of surgical specimens and take appropriate sections for histologic processing.
- Obtain and review pertinent clinical information and history for appropriate specimens.
- Perform frozen sections utilizing cryobath, cryostat, stains, and coverslip slides; maintain frozen section equipment.
- Collect designated specimens for special studies and frozen tissue bank.
- Conduct training seminars, instructing pathologists' assistant students in techniques and protocols for surgical pathology gross dissection.
- Evaluate and provide feedback on PA student projects.
- Prepare renal biopsy specimens for examination utilizing appropriate laboratory techniques and protocols.
- Maintain pathology laboratory, associated facilities, and all instruments and equipment in a clean and safe condition as specified by department safety and OSHA guidelines.
- Communicate with managers of other departments, including operative rooms, emergency room, labor and delivery, etc., and provide guidelines for specimen triage and requirements specified by CAP.
Qualifications
- Graduate from a Baccalaureate Pathology Assistant program or successful completion of a post-baccalaureate program from an approved school of Pathology Assistants.
- Certification by American Association of Pathology Assistants (AAPA) or American Society of Clinical Pathologists (ASCP) as a Pathology Assistant, or must successfully attain certification within 6 months of employment as a Pathology Assistant to retain employment at the DMCUL.
