Job Summary for the Nuclear Medicine Technologist

This role involves collecting diagnostic information through the administration of radioactive materials via intravenous methods, utilizing advanced radiation detection, processing, and imaging equipment, and providing radioactive materials for physician use. The Nuclear Medicine Technologist collaborates closely with other healthcare professionals to facilitate exceptional patient care and ensure the efficient completion of diagnostic studies and procedures while promoting optimal unit operations. Adherence to the SDHC ICARE values and maintaining a clean, efficient, and safe work environment is essential.

Key Responsibilities
  • Conduct Nuclear Medicine examinations in accordance with established protocols.
  • Administer prescribed pharmaceutical-grade radioactive materials to patients in compliance with state and federal regulations.
  • Implement appropriate safety measures regarding radioactive materials for self, staff, and patients as per regulatory guidelines.
  • Provide clear explanations of procedures to patients prior to examinations.
  • Exhibit proficiency with equipment utilized for Nuclear Medicine exams (Spect Cameras, PET, and PACS).
  • Ensure physician availability for procedures requiring medication administration and supervision.
  • Perform departmental maintenance tasks such as quality control checks.
  • Maintain accurate documentation regarding radioactive materials from receipt to administration.
  • Conduct surveys and document findings in work areas, patient rooms, and radioactive waste storage areas at scheduled intervals.
  • Enter procedure charges to patient accounts before the end of the scheduled shift.
  • Coordinate outpatient examinations with assigned physicians or extenders.
  • Manage scheduled procedures involving radioactive materials and supplies.
  • Adhere to policies related to Standard Precautions, Infection Control, and Radiation Safety as outlined by regulatory bodies.
  • Collaborate with the Radiation Safety Officer to uphold quality control and assurance standards to meet all regulatory requirements.
  • Perform additional duties as assigned to support departmental functions.
Qualifications for the Nuclear Medicine Technologist

Education and Experience:

  • Associate Degree and completion of a Nuclear Medicine Program (NMTCB) and/or ARRT (N).
  • Preferred: At least 1 year of experience as a Nuclear Medicine Technologist.

Licenses and Certifications:

  • Certification from the American Registry of Radiologic Technologists in Nuclear Medicine Technology (ARRT (N)) or as a Certified Nuclear Medicine Technologist (CNMT) through the Nuclear Medicine Technology Certification Board (NMTCB).
  • State-regulated Radiological Tech or Certified Medical Radiologic Technologist (CMRT) through the Texas Medical Board.
  • Current BLS Healthcare Provider certification required as per St. David's HealthCare policy.
  • Basic Cardiac Life Support certification must be obtained within 30 days of employment start date.
  • Advanced Cardiac Life Support certification must be obtained within 6 months of employment start date.
