Position Overview - Quality Assurance Engineer

The Quality Assurance Engineer plays a crucial role within the Supply Chain Quality team, ensuring that all materials supplied to project teams meet established specifications and are sourced from approved vendors.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Perform quality evaluations for prospective suppliers.
  • Facilitate the onboarding of new suppliers to ensure compliance with the Supplier Quality Manual.
  • Establish quality criteria for initial articles and confirm adherence (PPAP/PSW).
  • Oversee components identified as Critical to Quality (approval status, inspection requirements, etc.).
  • Create Quality Control Plans for essential equipment ordered for customer projects.
  • Manage the review and authorization of concession requests with insights from R&D and project teams.
  • Address issues related to defective materials received from suppliers/factories (SCARs, 8D, CAPA).
  • Conduct supplier audits and implement supplier development initiatives to mitigate quality risks.

Essential Functions:

Prevention:

  • Conduct initial assessments and surveillance audits of suppliers, reporting factual risks.
  • Monitor the completion of corrective actions addressing non-conformities and findings.
  • Evaluate supplier processes to identify potential issues and suggest enhancements for increased robustness.
  • Collaborate with suppliers to establish inspection requirements where process capability is lacking.
  • Request First Article Inspections (FAI) during the introduction of new products or process changes, driving actions to secure full FA approval.
  • Provide guidance to R&D Engineers on drawing specifications to enhance manufacturability and measurability.

Inspection:

  • Identify high-risk components for inspection (supplier, pre-delivery, incoming).
  • Support in-house inspectors and suppliers to ensure inspections are performed using calibrated equipment and appropriate measurement techniques.
  • Outsource measurements and inspections requiring specialized expertise (material analysis).
  • Develop in-house inspection capabilities as necessary to enhance self-sufficiency.

Correction:

  • Assess quality issues, classifying defects and prioritizing levels accordingly.
  • Request Supplier Corrective Actions and monitor until SCARs are resolved for assigned suppliers.
  • Provide recommendations for corrective actions to Vanderlande Factory.
  • Implement containment measures to halt the production and use of non-conforming products, reporting actions taken and escalating systemic issues.
  • Assist in determining the disposition of rejected products and initiate field replacements as necessary.
  • Lead 8D activities across the supply base to enhance supplier performance.

Continuous Improvement:

  • Lead and document ongoing QA continuous improvement initiatives.
  • Develop and maintain quality metrics and KPIs (actual vs. goal, performance, workload).
  • Support internal process audits against standards defined by line managers.
  • Collaborate with all departments to address process deviations before they escalate into quality issues, conducting internal audits and identifying necessary corrective actions.

Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's Degree (Technical preferred) or a minimum of 5-7 years of relevant manufacturing quality experience with a High School diploma.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Lean Six Sigma Green Belt or Black Belt certification.
  • Certified ISO Auditor.

Travel Requirements:

This position may require up to 25% travel.

Technical Skills:

  • Knowledge of OSHA regulations and safe work practices.
  • Ability to interpret and explain blueprint requirements (GD&T, ASME Y14.5, weld symbols AWS & ISO standards).
  • Familiarity with inspection equipment, including calibration requirements, Gage R&R, MSA.
  • Experience with dimensional and form inspection techniques.
  • Understanding of manufacturing processes (laser, bending, welding, coating, machining, casting).
  • Experience with Quality Management Systems (ISO and assessment/audit techniques).
  • Knowledge of lean and sustainability requirements.
  • Proficient in problem-solving techniques and root cause analysis (8D, 5 Why).
  • Working knowledge of First Article approval processes (PPAP, PSW, FMEA, Control Plans).
  • Familiarity with Statistical Process Control concepts.
  • Proficient in Microsoft Excel, Word, PowerPoint, and Visio.

  • Able to work collaboratively in a team environment and communicate effectively.
  • Capable of following instructions and working independently with minimal supervision.
  • Detail-oriented with a strong focus on quality.
  • Possess strong analytical and problem-solving skills.
  • Effective verbal and written communication skills.
  • Willingness to learn and be coached.

Work Environment:

The employee may encounter various physical demands, including standing for extended periods, lifting heavy objects (up to 40 lbs), and working in environments requiring personal protective equipment.
