The California State Office seeks a visionary leader to spearhead the development and implementation of an effective public policy advocacy and program strategy for advancing child well-being in the state. The ideal candidate will have a successful track record of executive leadership and/or senior management in the social sector, commitment to child well-being and racial equity, and proven fundraising experience.

Key Responsibilities

  • Collaborate with the National Director of Movement Building to execute and monitor program plans in California, ensuring alignment with the organization's vision.
  • Lead the coordination of state and local efforts in California, fostering a cohesive approach to achieving the organization's mission.
  • Provide strategic guidance and volunteer management for the California Advisory Council, empowering its members to drive impact.
  • Identify and build coalitions with key partners and constituencies within the state, leveraging collective strengths to advance child well-being.
  • Remain current and serve as an in-house expert on child well-being trends in California, informing the organization's advocacy and programming efforts.
  • Serve on the organization's Leadership Team, contributing to organizational communications and cohesion, and driving strategic decision-making.
  • In collaboration with the Communications team, act as the State spokesperson, leveraging proactive, earned media approaches to advance the organization's vision and strategy.

Program Development and Evaluation

  • Develop and lead the pursuit of the State Office's multi-year policy advocacy and research agenda, driving meaningful impact for children in California.
  • Direct grassroots organizing and collaboration with organizations and coalitions within the state, amplifying the organization's reach and influence.
  • Manage protocols and policies for leadership development and mobilization in targeted constituencies, empowering community members to drive change.
  • Oversee the development, tracking, and reporting of goals, outcomes, and performance metrics for the State Office, ensuring accountability and continuous improvement.
  • Collaborate with the Public Affairs team to develop, implement, and improve policy advocacy strategy, fostering a cohesive approach to advancing child well-being.
  • Collaborate with the Organization's Freedom Schools team to coordinate direct service partnerships in the state, enhancing the organization's impact and reach.
  • Participate and steward team participation in organizational development efforts, driving a culture of excellence and innovation.

Operations and Administration

  • Work with the National Director of Movement Building to budget and monitor the Office, ensuring sound fiscal and system management practices.
  • Develop human capital plans to achieve program and operations objectives, then hire, deploy, and support staff, empowering the team to drive results.
  • Develop and retain a team of high-performing staff to execute the strategy and key functions, fostering a culture of excellence and innovation.
  • Coordinate with Institutional Advancement to plan and implement an integrated fundraising program, meeting the State Office and organization's fundraising goals.

Qualifications and Competencies

  • A minimum of five (5) years of senior management or executive leadership experience in the social sector, with a strong track record of success.
  • Master's degree in social work, Public Policy, Public Administration, or a related field, or equivalent experience.
  • Proven experience in fundraising, community organizing, policy advocacy, racial equity, or base-building, with a nuanced understanding of the non-profit sector.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to build relationships and consensus with diverse stakeholders.
  • Results-driven management style, with the ability to set and manage priorities, and navigate complex, fast-paced environments.
  • A well-organized individual with high ethical standards, who is an independent thinker and a team player.
  • Ability to analyze data, gather and summarize information, and find solutions to business challenges.
