POSITION SUMMARY:
The Early Childhood Education Assistant is tasked with collaborating with a lead educator and fellow staff members to deliver a well-rounded, developmentally suitable curriculum that nurtures all facets of a child's growth, including health, safety, education, spiritual, and psychological well-being.
The Assistant must demonstrate a strong commitment to the mission of The Salvation Army, reflected in their professional conduct and representation of the organization within the community.
MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS:
- High School Diploma or GED
- Genuine interest in engaging with children aged 2-5
- Completion of coursework or training in Early Childhood Education or Child Development.
- Prior experience in supervising children within a daycare or preschool setting is highly desirable.
- Collaborates with lead educators to implement activities that cater to the physical, emotional, intellectual, spiritual, and social needs of children.
- Ensures that equipment and facilities are maintained in a clean and safe condition at all times, reporting any hazards to the ECE Director.
- Assists in preparing the classroom for daily activities and in cleaning up afterward.
- Helps establish routines and provides positive guidance to children.
- Facilitates activities that introduce foundational concepts in math, literacy, and culturally relevant programs.
- Assists in executing daily lesson plans that incorporate Bible thematic units, featuring diverse experiences such as songs, games, and storytelling.
- Maintains constant supervision of children, ensuring adherence to safety protocols and creating a secure environment that fosters self-esteem.
- Creates a welcoming atmosphere for both children and parents during drop-off and pick-up times.
- Communicates effectively with children in an understandable manner, employing positive discipline as necessary.
- Observes and records children's progress.
- Encourages teamwork and cooperation among staff, volunteers, and parents.
- Assists in the preparation, distribution, and cleanup of snacks and meals, promoting healthy eating habits and hygiene.
- Familiarizes with emergency procedures.
- Adheres to The Salvation Army Policies and Procedures.
- Maintains the established Code of Ethics for the Kroc Center Hawaii.
- Participates in staff and administrative meetings.
- Ensures regular and punctual attendance.
- Performs additional duties as assigned.
Working with children can be demanding. The Assistant must ensure constant supervision and engage children in safe, appropriate activities. The role requires the ability to manage multiple situations simultaneously, respond calmly to emergencies, and maintain composure under pressure. Self-motivation and the ability to work independently, as well as collaboratively with a team, are essential.
PHYSICAL DEMANDS:
The role may involve lifting and carrying children and equipment, as well as spending time on the floor or using child-sized furniture. The Assistant will assist in maintaining a clean environment and may interact with children who are ill, necessitating health precautions. The work environment can be busy and noisy, requiring constant vigilance.
COMMUNICATION DEMANDS:
This position requires interaction with co-workers and clients, necessitating both verbal and written communication. The Assistant must be able to convey instructions clearly and engage positively with individuals from diverse backgrounds.
EQUIPMENT NEEDS:
Equipment includes activity mats, classroom furniture, toys, arts and crafts supplies, and general office equipment.
CERTIFICATES & LICENSES:
Current First Aid and Child CPR certifications (to be obtained within 6 months of hire), Registry Card from Hawaii Careers with Young Children, and TB Test Clearance Card (current within 12 months prior to starting child care).
CLEARANCES:
The selected candidate will undergo a criminal history check and Child Abuse Index clearance. Previous convictions will be assessed based on context.
