Job Summary

We are seeking a highly skilled and experienced Perioperative Assistant to join our team at WVU Medicine. The successful candidate will provide comprehensive nursing management and care during the perioperative phase, working closely with the operating surgeon and other healthcare professionals.

Key Responsibilities
  • Perform RNFA interventions consistent with procedures established by the Department of Surgery and/or as directed by the Director of Surgery or by the surgeon.
  • Adhere to hospital policy for reporting patient safety issues, including errors, and consistently put patient safety first when performing job duties.
  • Submit required reports, including departmental reports, quality/safety reports, 90-day evaluations, competency and performance planning documents in a timely manner.
  • Maintain confidentiality of patient and employee information in verbal, written and electronic form, and assure that rights to privacy and confidentiality are maintained for patients, employees, physicians, and all other customers.
  • Demonstrate teamwork, cooperation, and collaboration with co-workers, patients and other customers throughout the department and hospital.
  • Effectively communicate problems/opportunities for improvement, and provide constructive input through the use of effective verbal/written communication skills.
  • Attend required in-service presentations, and complete mandatory education requirements.
  • Use equipment safely and effectively, and properly identify and report equipment service needs.
  • Document work using department-specific forms/computer systems accurately and completely.
  • Use established guidelines for reporting a significant medical error or unanticipated outcome in the patient's care which results in patient harm.
  • Systematically collect, communicate and record data pertaining to the health status and nursing needs of patients on an ongoing basis.
  • Participate in the planning of individualized patient care with the patient, physician, anesthesia and family.
  • Utilize established policies, procedures and protocols when implementing the patient's plan of care in an effort to positively affect patient outcome.
  • Participate in evaluating and improving delivery of patient care in the surgical setting.
  • Demonstrate responsibility for individual performance to ensure the timely completion of job duties.
  • Understand and demonstrate role in compliance with the Joint Commission's National Patient Safety Goals (NPSG's), documentation, and participation of Core Measures.
Requirements
  • Current license to practice Registered Professional Nursing in West Virginia, or applicable state licensure where services will be performed.
  • Completion of RNFA course and internship that meets the criteria established by AORN for first assist programs.
  • CNOR certification
  • First Assist certification
  • BCLS validation within 30 days of employment
Preferred Qualifications
  • Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS)
