Job Summary:

We are seeking a skilled Nursing Attendant to join our team at NYU Langone Hospital - Brooklyn. As a Nursing Attendant, you will play a vital role in providing high-quality patient care and supporting the nursing team in our Medical Surgical department.

Key Responsibilities:
  • Assist in implementing the nursing process by performing direct and indirect patient care to assigned patients under the supervision of the Registered Professional Nurse.
  • Maintain an orderly and safe patient care environment and unit.
  • Assist with admission/transfer/discharge of patients, including orienting patients to the hospital environment, providing toileting supplies, and assisting patients with removing clothes and safeguarding personal property.
  • Prepare bedside units to receive patients and assist with discharges, including assisting patients to dress and pack personal belongings.
  • Provide basic hygiene to patients, including bathing, AM/PM care, mouth care, denture care, hair care, nail and foot care, and shaving.
  • Prepare patients for meals, including correctly positioning patients for eating/tube feedings and assisting patients with utensils and food items.
  • Perform and assist with enema procedures, collect specimens as directed by the RN, and inform the RN of any audible clinical alarms.
  • Assist with moving, lifting, positioning, and transporting patients, and assist with removal and security of patient personal items prior to procedures.
  • Change linens in accordance with policy and as necessary.
  • Take and electronically record blood pressure, temperature, pulse, pulse oximetry, and respiration per care level standard and as directed by the RN.
  • Report abnormalities to the RN.
  • Weigh patients and electronically record on admission, as ordered, and/or as directed by the RN.
  • Measure and record oral intake, urinary output, bowel elimination, gastric, and other drainage onto the I&O record (form or electronic).
  • Calculate 8-hour totals and empty drainage bags.
  • Perform postmortem care.
  • Perform safety observations for patients on continuous observation or in restraints, per policy and as directed.
  • Report any changes observed in the patient's condition to the RN.
  • Respond to and meet patient/family needs and customer concerns as soon as possible with compassion and understanding.
  • Establish effective, caring relationships with staff, patients, family, and other members of the healthcare team.
  • Maintain competence through in-service and educational programs.
  • Attend staff meetings and review a safe and uncluttered environment of care in patient rooms, including removing excessive furniture, supplies, and equipment.
  • Assist with supply and equipment management of patient, procedure, and supply rooms per department standards.
  • Maintain cleanliness of utility rooms and pantries as assigned.
  • Perform other duties such as errands, relieving other units, bringing stretchers, and assisting other members of the healthcare team, as directed.
Requirements:
  • High School Diploma or equivalent required.
  • Graduate of Certified Nursing Attendant program or minimum 6 months relevant experience.
  • BLS or Heartsaver CPR/AED certification (issued by the American Heart Association-AHA) or Heartsaver CPR/AED certification (issued by the American Heart Association-AHA) is required upon entry to the position.
  • Working knowledge of English is evident in verbal, reading, and writing abilities; other language an asset.
  • Strong customer service and communication skills.
