The Applied Research Laboratory's Geospatial and Imaging Division is seeking a highly skilled and experienced leader to serve as the Department Head for Imaging Science and Computer Vision. We are looking for an individual with a strong background in engineering and science, who is passionate about leading multidisciplinary teams and research efforts in a fast-paced environment.

This position may be filled as either a Research and Development Engineer or a non-tenure Research Faculty. The successful candidate will be responsible for mentoring and supervising department personnel, leading programs and teams, and collaborating with geospatial imagery analysts to understand and automate workflows and improve human processes.

The ideal candidate will have significant experience as a Principal Investigator on DoD/IC research programs, demonstrated leadership capabilities, and relevant experience in a field directly applicable or highly related to Data Sciences, Engineering, Computer Sciences, or Geospatial Sciences.

The Department Head will be responsible for:

  • Mentoring and supervising department personnel to balance project objectives with continuous learning and professional growth.
  • Leading programs and teams, and being part of a highly collaborative leadership team.
  • Collaborating with geospatial imagery analysts to understand and automate workflows and improve human processes.
  • Leading the creation of processes and algorithms to transform traditional GEOINT imagery and open source data into spatio-temporal information describing places, events, and activities.
  • Modeling the physics of remote sensing systems to associate real-world objects to known signatures and doctrines.
  • Developing the ability to discover and capture information from geospatial imagery to better represent the most advanced understanding of world events, systems, and discrete entities.
  • Applying the scientific method across multiple disciplines to advance Image Science and Computer Vision and develop automated analytics through systematic experimentation.
  • Leading experiment-driven applied research and development.
  • Leading scientific research projects and developing geospatial algorithms while collaborating among diverse domains to further scientific understanding and analytic tools.
  • Growing career and capabilities, planning and conducting applied research, providing technical guidance and oversight, leading large research efforts, reporting results, fostering trusted relationships with sponsors, and advising on new and evolving technology and techniques.
  • Engaging in research efforts ranging from proof-of-concept through integrated production systems.

This position can be filled as an Advanced Professional, Senior Professional, or Principal Professional, depending on your education and experience. Minimally requires a Bachelor's degree in an Engineering or Science discipline plus 5 years' related experience for an Advanced Professional. Additional education and/or experience are required for higher-level positions. A Master's degree or higher is preferred.

Required Qualifications

The ideal candidate will have:

  • Excels in highly collaborative leadership teams of peers.
  • Excellent communication skills, be dependable, responsive, curious, collaborative, and have high interpersonal skills.
  • Significant experience as a Principal Investigator on DoD/IC research programs, and demonstrated leadership capabilities.
  • Relevant experience in a field directly applicable or highly related to Data Sciences, Engineering, Computer Sciences, or Geospatial Sciences.
  • Ability to design experiments, perform analysis, and design or apply meaningful metrics to measure results, and teach/mentor others on process.
  • Able to adapt and learn new skills, to execute specific research projects, and to meet task deadlines and goals.
  • Experience with computer programming in one or more of the following: Python, R, Java, C++, or Matlab.
Preferred Qualifications

The ideal candidate will also have:

  • Experience working within DoD/IC Analysis or Operational environments.
  • Experience with Git, GUI development, open source scientific computation, computer vision, physics modeling, or machine learning tools.
