This role is pivotal in providing financial guidance, education, and support to patients within the infusion center prior to their treatment initiation.
Key Responsibilities:
- Assess treatment plans to identify necessary services.
- Collect essential information for eligibility and benefit verification, including diagnosis and billable CPT codes.
- Confirm eligibility and medical benefits with third-party payers for scheduled services, including infusion treatments and chemotherapy.
- Secure prior authorizations and necessary prerequisites before services commence, ensuring compliance with reimbursement policies.
- Document comprehensive eligibility and benefit information in the patient's electronic health record.
- Calculate patient financial responsibilities based on treatment regimens.
- Prepare and communicate financial treatment estimates to patients before the commencement of their treatment plans.
- Identify patients requiring financial assistance and coordinate with the financial assistance department for evaluation.
- Maintain accurate records of all financial counseling interactions in the electronic chart.
- Generate daily reports for patient collections to assist front desk operations.
- Reconcile collection reports with actual collections and manage daily deposits.
- Notify infusion nurses and physicians of any delays in the financial counseling process.
- Assist front desk staff in identifying patients needing financial counseling prior to service delivery.
- Provide comprehensive support to patients regarding their financial obligations, available assistance, insurance, and benefits.
- Perform additional duties as assigned by management.
Qualifications:
- Minimum of 2 years of experience as a financial counselor in an oncology setting.
- High School Diploma or equivalent is required.
- Experience in oncology coding and billing is essential.
Knowledge and Skills:
- Proficient understanding of oncology billing practices, CPT codes, and ICD10s.
- Ability to accurately calculate drug billable units.
- Familiarity with oncology terminology.
- Proficient in electronic medical records (EMR) and practice management software.
- Strong understanding of payer guidelines and reimbursement policies.
- Excellent interpersonal and communication skills.
- Exceptional customer service abilities.
- Capacity to work independently and collaboratively in a team environment.
- Strong organizational and time management skills.
