Position Overview
The Learning Support Specialist II (LSS2) operates as a professional tutor, providing in-person tutoring services. The LSS2 is tasked with assisting students, either individually or in small groups, to enhance their understanding and mastery of the subject matter. This role requires the ability to manage multiple students in a collaborative tutoring environment, alongside other tutors. The LSS2 will liaise with the department regarding the progress and specific needs of each student. Responsibilities include generating reports from tutoring software and communicating findings to the supervisor. A strong grasp of the subject matter and effective communication skills are essential, utilizing diverse teaching methods and tools.
Tutoring Responsibilities
- Enhances students' comprehension and command of course material beyond classroom instruction, focusing on introductory courses in the area of expertise.
- Assists students in developing and applying effective learning and study techniques, ensuring scheduled meetings are upheld.
- Keeps thorough records of all tutoring sessions and generates departmental reports, maintaining documentation of all tutoring interactions.
- Communicates relevant information to course instructors to support student learning and demonstrates proficient use of the College's tutoring software.
- Maintains comprehensive knowledge of course content and various instructional methodologies to cater to diverse student learning preferences. Participates in tutor training sessions.
- Provides assistance to Learning Support Specialists, Peer Tutors, and Supplemental Instructional Leaders, including technical support for tutoring software and reporting.
- Promotes a respectful and inclusive environment for faculty, staff, students, and community members.
- Recognizes and supports the diverse backgrounds of campus constituents in a courteous manner.
- Master's Degree in a relevant field.
- At least one year of teaching or tutoring experience in an educational setting.
- Experience in teaching Speech or Public Speaking.
- Experience teaching at Columbus State Community College.
- Work schedule may vary based on departmental requirements.
