Job Summary
The MDS Nurse employs independent judgment in the planning, organizing, directing, and evaluating of the activities performed by the professional and supportive nursing staff involved in the resident care plan.
Collaboration is key, as the MDS Nurse works closely with residents, families, advocates, and interdisciplinary colleagues, including healthcare providers, to ensure the ongoing care of each resident and to enhance their quality of life.
When on the floor, the Registered Nurse (RN) utilizes the nursing process—assessment, diagnosis, outcomes/planning, implementation, and evaluation—to deliver tailored nursing care to patients.
The RN demonstrates expertise and practices within the full scope of nursing knowledge, applying appropriate age and population-specific standards as designated in their clinical setting.
The RN is responsible for coordinating care, conducting resident assessments, providing education, and performing various nursing interventions.
In a charge nurse capacity, the RN delegates appropriate tasks to licensed and unlicensed assistive personnel, ensuring that these tasks align with job descriptions, skills, resident care needs, and the competence level of the delegate.
As a charge nurse, the RN offers necessary support and guidance to delegates to guarantee safe and reliable resident care and to address any care and service concerns.
The RN operates within the scopes and standards of nursing practice as outlined in the Nurse Practice Act and Administrative Rules applicable to their state of practice and licensure.
The Professional Nursing Practice acknowledges the Scope and Standards of Practice and the Code of Ethics for Nurses as established by the American Nurses Association, serving as the foundation for nursing care delivery and professional conduct.
Qualifications
A graduate from a National League of Nursing (NLN) or American Association of Colleges of Nursing (AACN) accredited nursing program is preferred.
A minimum of one year of experience working as a licensed nurse with the senior population is preferred. Specific services or positions may have additional education, training, or experience requirements. Certification as a Resident Assessment Coordinator (RAC-CT) and management or supervisory experience are preferred.
Currently holds an unencumbered RN license with the State Board of Nursing where nursing practice occurs and/or possesses multistate licensure if in a Nurse Licensure Compact (NLC) state.
