Job Summary
The MDS Nurse plays a crucial role in the planning, organizing, directing, and evaluating the activities of both professional and supportive nursing staff involved in the resident care plan.
Collaboration is key, as the MDS Nurse works closely with residents, families, advocates, and interdisciplinary colleagues, including healthcare providers, to ensure that each resident receives the highest quality of life possible.
When on the floor, the Registered Nurse (RN) utilizes the nursing process (assessment, diagnosis, outcomes/planning, implementation, and evaluation) to deliver personalized nursing care to patients.
The RN demonstrates expertise and operates within the full scope of nursing knowledge, applying appropriate age and population-specific standards as designated in their clinical setting.
The RN is responsible for providing care across all phases of preventative care, health maintenance, diagnosis, and treatment. This includes coordinating care, conducting resident assessments, educating residents, and performing various nursing interventions.
In a charge nurse capacity, the RN delegates appropriate tasks to licensed and unlicensed assistive personnel, ensuring that these tasks align with job descriptions, skills, resident care needs, and the competence level of the delegate.
As a charge nurse, the RN offers adequate support and guidance to delegates to ensure safe and reliable administration of resident care and effective resolution of care and service concerns.
The RN operates within the scopes and standards of nursing practice as defined by the Nurse Practice Act and Administrative Rules in their state of practice and licensure.
The Professional Nursing Practice adheres to the Scope and Standards of Practice and the Code of Ethics for Nurses with Interpretive Statements as established by the American Nurses Association, serving as the foundation for nursing care delivery and professional conduct.
Qualifications
A graduate from a National League of Nursing (NLN) or American Association of Colleges of Nursing (AACN) accredited nursing program is preferred.
A minimum of one year of experience working as a licensed nurse with the senior population is preferred. Specific services or positions may have additional education, training, or experience requirements. Resident Assessment Coordinator-Certified (RAC-CT) certification, along with management or supervisory experience, is preferred.
The candidate must currently hold an unencumbered RN license with the State Board of Nursing in their practice area and/or possess multistate licensure if in a Nurse Licensure Compact (NLC) state.
