This role involves delivering high-quality healthcare services to inmates and providing support to staff during critical situations. Accurate and thorough documentation is essential.
The position requires oversight and guidance of Licensed Practical Nurses, Certified Nursing Assistants, Medics, Registered Nurses, and RN Supervisors (RNCAs and RNCBs).
The primary focus is to align staff with the objectives of the medical unit, the facility, and the Department of Corrections.
Key responsibilities include planning, scheduling, coordinating, and developing educational programs tailored to the needs of nursing staff.
Establishing collaborative relationships with operational leaders and staff is crucial to address educational needs and achieve desired outcomes related to key performance indicators.
The role also involves serving as the main instructor and coordinator for American Red Cross Basic Life Support, First Aid/CPR/AED, and Life-Threatening Bleeding Tourniquet Application courses.
Ensuring compliance with training mandates set by the Department of Criminal Justice Services, the Department of Corrections, the American Correctional Association, and other relevant authorities is required.
Flexibility to take on additional duties or assignments may be necessary to meet the clinical and administrative demands of the Department.
Minimum Qualifications
- Current licensure or eligibility for licensure as a Registered Nurse by the Virginia Board of Nursing (or another state participating in the Nurse Licensure Compact)
- Understanding of professional nursing principles and evidence-based practices, including Continuous Quality Improvement (CQI), educational requirements, and patient safety
- Knowledge of medication administration, effects, and potential side effects
- Proven ability to organize and manage both administrative and clinical activities within a medical unit
- Proficiency in standard computer software applications
- Significant knowledge of adult education methods, curriculum development, needs assessment, and evaluation techniques
- Extensive experience in nursing education, including developing orientation programs and ongoing educational curricula
Additional Considerations
- Certification as a BLS/CPR instructor by the American Red Cross
- Certification in Nursing Education/Professional Development
- Willingness to share a portfolio of teaching and educational materials upon request
- Experience in an acute care environment
- Background in Correctional Nursing
