Aquatics Specialist Job Description

We are seeking a highly skilled and experienced Aquatics Specialist to join our team at the City of Panama City Beach, FL. As an Aquatics Specialist, you will be responsible for supervising and participating in the work of personnel engaged in the maintenance and programs of the Aquatic Center.

Key Responsibilities:
  • Supervise and coordinate the work of lifeguards, developing a comprehensive training program for lifeguard staff.
  • Develop and update comprehensive training manuals for lifeguard staff.
  • Maintain all health and safety equipment, supplies, and inventory in good working order, reviewing, developing, and executing training on cleanliness methods and standards.
  • Coordinate the swim lesson and water exercise program, serving as the main instructor for swimming lessons, and assisting in the development of swim lesson curriculum.
  • Monitor the swimming area to ensure compliance with safety guidelines and respond to emergency events, performing lifeguarding duties.
  • Manage open swim programs and activities.
  • Provide in-service training for all instructors, leading American Red Cross swimming and water safety courses.
  • Supervise and participate in facility cleaning and maintenance.
  • Manage the set-up, safety protocols, staffing, and break-down for special events.
  • Monitor pool chemistry and make adjustments as required.
  • Perform the duties of a Lifeguard as needed.
  • Assist in the operations of the ticket office.
  • Assign, direct, schedule, supervise, evaluate, and discipline personnel.
  • Assist in the recruitment of lifeguards and swim instructors.
  • Perform related duties.
Requirements:
  • Knowledge and level of competency commonly associated with completion of specialized training in the field of work, in addition to basic skills typically associated with a high school education.
  • Experience sufficient to thoroughly understand the work of subordinate positions to be able to answer questions and resolve problems, usually associated with one to three years' experience or service.
  • Possession of or ability to readily obtain a valid driver's license issued by the State of Florida for the type of vehicle or equipment operated.
  • Possession of Red Cross Lifeguarding certification, and First Aid/CPR certification. Possession of or the ability to obtain within 12-months a Lifeguard Instructor certification or possession of or the ability to obtain within 6 months a Water Safety Instructor certification. Lifeguard Instructor Trainer or Water Safety Instructor Trainer preferred.
Working Conditions:

The work is typically performed while intermittently sitting, standing, crouching, or stooping. The employee frequently lifts light and occasionally heavy objects, uses tools or equipment requiring a high degree of dexterity, distinguishes between shades of color, and utilizing the sense of smell. The work is typically performed in an aquatic facility and/or outdoors, occasionally in cold or inclement weather. The employee may be exposed to machinery with moving parts and irritating chemicals. Work requires the use of protective devices such as masks, goggles, gloves, etc.

Supervisory and Management Responsibility:

This position has direct supervision over assigned personnel.
