Lead Aquatic Safety Coordinator

Under the supervision of the Aquatic Director or Pool Manager, the Lead Aquatic Safety Coordinator is tasked with ensuring a secure, inviting, and hygienic environment for all members and participants within the aquatic facilities. This role includes responding to emergencies and administering CPR/AED, First Aid, and Oxygen in accordance with certifications. The Lead Aquatic Safety Coordinator must remain vigilant and easily identifiable at all times while maintaining a professional appearance. Excellent member relations and conflict resolution skills are essential. Additionally, this position involves assisting in the training and onboarding of new Lifeguards and Pool Attendants. The Lead Aquatic Safety Coordinator is expected to operate at peak efficiency in all assigned duties within the aquatic department and embody the values and mission of the YMCA.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:
  • Implement preventative lifeguarding by enforcing pool regulations and conducting routine inspections of the pool and deck area throughout their shift.
  • Inspect, clean, and properly store safety equipment, promptly reporting any issues to the Aquatic Director or designated personnel.
  • Ensure the security of the pool area at all times, including managing access through locking and unlocking doors and gates.
  • Maintain cleanliness in and around the aquatic facility.
  • Provide focused supervision of the pool while on duty, demonstrating vigilant scanning techniques every 10 seconds to monitor all areas of their zone.
  • Adhere to organizational policies and procedures regarding the safety and well-being of members, program participants, guests, and staff.
  • Understand and execute rescue and emergency protocols, documenting incidents accurately and communicating with the Aquatic Director or designated personnel as per established procedures.
  • Keep an accurate record of hours worked and be responsible for arranging substitutes for any absences.
  • Engage positively with participants, members, and guests to ensure a welcoming experience.
  • Comply with organizational operating policies and procedures, including swim test protocols.
  • Assist certified swim lesson instructors with class instruction as directed by the Aquatics Director or designated personnel.
  • Participate actively in all training sessions, staff meetings, and emergency drills as assigned.
  • May be required to oversee general aquatic facility supervision during shifts.
  • Serve as the lead responder in emergency situations.
  • Exemplify best practices in scanning, crowd management, and member service.
  • Maintain open communication with supervisors regarding chemical management, member concerns, and staffing needs.
  • Oversee chemical testing, weather-related closures, general operations, lifeguard rotations, and swim test policy enforcement, reporting any concerns to the Aquatic Director or designated personnel.
  • May be tasked with general pool maintenance and mechanical duties as needed.
  • May have staffing management responsibilities, including adjusting lifeguard schedules based on facility usage and onboarding new staff.
  • Perform additional duties as assigned.
Qualifications:

Education/Experience:
  • Must be at least 18 years of age.
  • Proficient swimming skills as determined by passing a swim assessment.
  • Ability to cultivate positive relationships with diverse groups and individuals.
  • Represent the YMCA positively in all interactions.
Certifications/Trainings:
  • Must possess and maintain current American Red Cross Lifeguard certification, including Oxygen (if holding YMCA Lifeguard certification, must transition to ARC within a specified timeframe).
  • Must possess and maintain current CPR/AED (in compliance with Lifeguard certification), First Aid, and Oxygen certifications.
  • Must possess and maintain YMCA Swim Lesson Instructor certification or obtain it within a specified timeframe.
  • Must possess and maintain American Red Cross Lifeguard Instructor certification.
  • Must possess and maintain a CPO certification or obtain it within a specified timeframe.
  • May be required to obtain additional certifications as directed by the Aquatics Director or designated personnel.
