Job Overview

Position Summary:

As a vital member of the Missouri Secretary of State's team, the Preservation Specialist plays a crucial role in the care and restoration of significant archival materials. This position focuses on the conservation of 19th and 20th-century paper documents, including maps and books, while occasionally addressing the needs of photographs. The primary responsibility is to execute conservation treatments, complemented by preventative care, community outreach, and educational training.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Preservation Technician: Execute standard conservation procedures, which may include:
    • Surface cleaning techniques
    • Moistening and flattening processes
    • Removal of old adhesives, fasteners, and mends
    • Reinforcement and lining of documents
    • Mold treatment and prevention
  • Preservation Specialist: Conduct ethical conservation practices with varying complexity, including:
    • Assessment of documents, maps, and books to identify treatment requirements through physical and chemical analysis;
    • Creation of condition reports and treatment plans, including photographic documentation, adhering to established protocols;
    • Implement all conservation activities in alignment with the American Institute for Conservation's Code of Ethics and supervisory guidance.
  • Maintain comprehensive written and photographic records of all conservation efforts.
  • Ensure the laboratory environment is clean and safe for all activities.
  • Assist with logistical tasks such as inventory management and supply tracking.
  • Training: Occasionally conduct training sessions for staff, volunteers, and interns on safe handling and preservation techniques.
  • Outreach: Provide educational resources and information to external groups as needed.
  • Other duties as assigned to support departmental operations.

Essential Skills and Qualifications:

  • Exceptional manual dexterity with tools such as scissors, knives, and adhesives.
  • Strong attention to detail and the ability to maintain high-quality standards during repetitive tasks.
  • Familiarity with digital photography and photo-editing software.
  • Effective communication skills, both verbal and written.
  • Physical capability to stand, bend, kneel, reach, lift up to 40 lbs., and navigate ladders.
  • Ability to work in environments with dust and mold.
  • Strong interpersonal skills and teamwork abilities.
  • Willingness to travel for occasional overnight assignments.

Qualifications:

  • General Requirements: A valid Missouri driver's license or the ability to obtain one within 30 days of employment.
  • Preservation Technician:
    • High School diploma or equivalent.
    • Background in laboratory sciences, art, history, or cultural heritage preservation is advantageous.
    • Interest in book and paper conservation or archival preservation is preferred.
    • Basic knowledge of chemistry and laboratory safety practices.
  • Preservation Specialist:
    • Minimum of 2 years of advanced training in conservation through formal education or a combination of apprenticeship and internships. Understanding of the chemical and physical properties of paper and the causes of deterioration.
    • Preferred: Advanced degree or certificate in paper conservation from an accredited program, or a Master's degree in a related field with experience in paper conservation. Strong knowledge of organic and physical chemistry is beneficial.
