POSITION DESCRIPTION:


Facilities Management and Planning oversees custodial services; building maintenance and alterations; utilities operations (heating and cooling); landscape services; capital construction review as it pertains to future maintenance; property control and inventory; delivery services; stores operations and other support activities necessary for the benefit of administration and academic areas of the campus community.

The campus includes extensive grounds and numerous buildings requiring regular upkeep. Facilities Management maintains a significant amount of building space and is staffed by a dedicated team responsible for a substantial portion of the total campus budget.

This role is essential for fulfilling custodial duties and occasionally supporting other facilities operations.

The custodian is responsible for cleaning a building independently or alongside other custodians, performing a variety of tasks based on specific assignments.

Key custodial responsibilities include cleaning and sanitizing restrooms and showers, managing waste, dusting, window cleaning, and maintaining carpets and floors, along with other periodic tasks necessary for the overall cleanliness and sanitation of academic buildings.

Minimum Requirements: Minimum qualifications are not established for this classification. The appointing authority is responsible for recruitment and selection. Refer to Personnel Rule Ability to understand and follow written and oral instructions.
Preferred Requirements: One year of custodial experience is preferred, specifically within a public or educational setting.

Experience with carpet and hard floor cleaning equipment such as extractors, scrubbers, and buffers, as well as knowledge of proper procedures for carpet and hard floor maintenance is preferred.

Essential Functions: Duties - The following examples are typical work activities that illustrate the general range of work functions and are not meant to be all-inclusive or restrictive:

Daily tasks may include:
- Cleaning classrooms and arranging desks and chairs
- Cleaning offices
- Dust mopping/wet mopping hallways and buffing floors
- Cleaning, sanitizing, and stocking restrooms
- Cleaning stairwells (inside and out)
- Vacuuming/dust mopping floors.

Assigning work for student worker(s) and monitoring performance. (10%) Maintaining carpets by extracting, shampooing, etc. (10%) Maintaining hard floors by scrubbing, buffing, stripping, and waxing.

(10%) Periodic tasks include:
- Changing lights
- Cleaning windows
- Ordering supplies
- Assisting with moves and setups
(5%)
Cleaning around the perimeter of the building(s):
- Cleaning walks
- Sweeping entrances and porches
- Snow removal

Skills, Knowledge, and Abilities: In-depth knowledge of standard cleaning procedures.
Strong background in handling, mixing, and using cleaning chemicals safely.

Physical Demands: The worker must be physically able to perform all assigned duties and operate assigned equipment.
Frequent position changes including bending, stooping, kneeling, reaching, ascending/descending stairs and ladders.
Utilizes manual and power equipment to clean floors. Ability to move objects such as desks and chairs.
Occasional school activities may require earlier reporting or extension of scheduled work shifts.
The work is primarily indoors but may involve some outdoor tasks, sometimes in inclement weather.
Work involves the use of hazardous chemicals; some ladder work is required.
Special Conditions: Must be willing to travel and attend training programs off-site for professional development.
Must be able to work additional hours and adjust working hours to meet special job requirements. May be called back periodically to perform work as needed on an emergency basis.
Must be able to successfully pass a pre-employment background check.
