Under the guidance of a designated supervisor, the role involves administering preventive care and rehabilitation for students engaged in various intercollegiate sports, ensuring adherence to health and safety protocols. This position also includes overseeing the distribution, upkeep, and replacement of protective athletic gear and equipment for the college's athletic programs.
KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:
1. Ensure the safety and well-being of student athletes during all assigned activities, addressing both physical and non-physical health concerns.
2. Provide immediate care and management for injuries and illnesses, including prevention, assessment, treatment, and rehabilitation, while recognizing when to escalate to emergency services or refer to medical professionals.
3. Maintain precise electronic records of all injury and treatment interactions with student athletes, ensuring compliance with the Health Insurance Portability & Accountability Act (HIPAA) and the Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act (FERPA).
4. Attend athletic events and practices as required, including nontraditional competitions as outlined in relevant regulations.
5. Monitor environmental conditions to safeguard student athletes, staff, and attendees, making recommendations to the Athletic Director as necessary.
6. Adhere to the regulations set forth by the California Community College Athletic Association (CCCAA), the Central Valley Conference (CVC), and the Athletic Department.
7. Travel with athletic teams to select competitions when required.
SUPERVISORY DUTIES:
This role will be performed under general supervision, either independently or through delegation to student trainers.
QUALIFICATIONS:
- Bachelor's Degree in physical education, athletic training, kinesiology, or a related field.
- Minimum of 1 year of experience in athletic training.
- Current certification from the National Athletic Trainers Association.
- CPR and First Aid certification within 90 days of hire.
- Eligibility for a Class B driver's license.
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:
- Master's Degree in a related discipline.
SKILLS AND COMPETENCIES:
- Comprehensive knowledge of a wide range of medical issues.
- Strong assessment and evaluation skills, with the ability to collaborate with healthcare professionals.
- Critical thinking and decision-making abilities regarding assessment, treatment, rehabilitation, and return-to-play protocols.
- Attention to detail in injury tracking and documentation.
- Effective communication skills, particularly in high-pressure situations.
- Strong organizational skills with the ability to manage multiple tasks independently.
PERSONAL ATTRIBUTES:
- Ability to independently organize and plan work assignments.
- Capacity to build and maintain collaborative relationships within the district and externally.
- Detail-oriented with a commitment to understanding diverse backgrounds and needs.
WORK ENVIRONMENT:
This position supports the athletic programs at Taft College, typically requiring 40 hours per week over 12 months. Flexibility for evening, overtime, holiday, or weekend hours may be necessary. The work environment is primarily indoors, on a busy community college campus serving a diverse student body.
