Primary Purpose

An individual in this role is responsible for a range of law enforcement tasks aimed at ensuring safety within the courthouse and upholding order in the judicial system. Duties include attending court sessions, safeguarding witnesses and judges, transporting detainees to and from courtrooms, and addressing the needs of jurors.

Employees may encounter potentially hazardous situations that necessitate sound judgment, diplomacy, and assertiveness to resolve. Responsibilities are executed in line with established protocols and are often guided by specific instructions.

Work is conducted under the general oversight of the Lieutenant-Bailiff and is assessed based on compliance with office policies and the effectiveness of task execution.

Essential Functions

- Acts as a bailiff for District and Superior Court, ensuring order, managing court sessions, and escorting inmates to and from court.
- Provides security for the courthouse and courtroom participants.
- Ensures jurors are sequestered and their needs are met.
- Executes criminal warrant services and completes necessary documentation for arrests.
- Prepares release orders and bond documentation for detainees.
- Delivers subpoenas and appearance bonds.
- May assist in escorting individuals to the Clerk's Office.
- May be tasked with transporting detainees.
- Performs related duties as required.

Minimum Education and Experience

- High school diploma or an equivalent combination of experience and training.
- Certification as a law enforcement officer in accordance with the North Carolina Sheriffs Training and Standards Commission.
- Valid North Carolina driver's license.

Additional Information

Physical Requirements:
Must be capable of operating various equipment including handcuffs, leg irons, nightsticks, firearms, and two-way radios. The role may require exerting up to 100 pounds of force occasionally, and/or up to 50 pounds of force frequently, and/or 25 pounds of force constantly to move objects. Responsibilities may involve walking, standing, running, and physical confrontations. Physical demand requirements are categorized as Medium Work.
