Job Summary: We are seeking a highly motivated and detail-oriented Substitute Customer Service Specialist to join our team at Slcolibrary. As a Substitute Customer Service Specialist, you will provide exceptional customer service to library patrons, perform various administrative tasks, and support the library's operations.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Interact with library customers, both in person and over the phone, to provide assistance and resolve issues.
  • Operate personal computers to check materials in and out, and perform other administrative tasks.
  • Operate cash registers and collect money for overdue fines and other charges.
  • Answer inquiries from library customers about borrowing procedures and library services.
  • Accept library card applications, including verifying customer identification and eligibility for services.
  • Check shelves to search for requested library materials.
  • Shelve library materials on hold shelves to facilitate self-service pick-up.
  • Answer telephone calls and respond to customer inquiries.
  • Sort and shelve library materials.
  • Empties book drops and performs clerical support tasks as needed.
  • May use automated sorting machines and self-check stations.

Requirements:

  • Knowledge of computerized library systems.
  • Ability to perform basic keyboarding skills using Windows-based software.
  • Ability to use a PC, cash register, and other basic office equipment.
  • Ability to communicate effectively in English.
  • Ability to handle cash and make change.
  • Mental alertness, focus, and attention to detail.
  • Ability to problem-solve and handle difficult customer service situations.

Physical Requirements:

  • Manual dexterity and extensive wrist and hand movements to hold library materials under a laser and/or place materials between shelved items.
  • Visual acuity, corrected, to read computer screens and letters and numbers (as small as 10 font) on spine labels.
  • Ability to grasp and lift materials weighing up to 30 pounds.
  • Ability to push/pull a loaded shelving cart weighing up to 150 pounds.
  • Ability to bend, stoop, or kneel to reach the lowest bookshelves and reach to a maximum of six feet, with or without a step stool, to place materials on upper shelves.

Work Requirements:

  • Must be available to work at four or more library locations.
  • Must be available to work one Saturday per month, either four or eight-hour shift, and work a minimum of 20-25 hours on average a month.

Temporary Positions:

  • An 'At Will', FLSA non-exempt employee who is not eligible for County benefits and who must work an average of 29 hours or less per week or an average of 129 hours or less per month.

  • Are not eligible for County benefits except as otherwise provided for by policy.
  • Are not considered merit employees.
  • Are 'at will' employees who may be terminated for any reason, without notice, and without a pre-termination hearing.
