The Role

We are seeking a highly skilled and experienced Senior Privacy Counsel to join our growing Legal and Compliance team. As a key member of our team, you will play a critical role in providing legal support on a broad range of privacy topics, driving cross-functional initiatives, and ensuring compliance with global privacy laws.

Key Responsibilities:
  • Provide legal support on privacy-related matters, including data protection, security, and compliance.
  • Develop, implement, and improve privacy frameworks and processes to ensure compliance with global privacy laws.
  • Collaborate with cross-functional teams to integrate privacy and compliance requirements into business processes and operations.
  • Provide products counseling on new and existing products, features, and data uses to ensure compliance with applicable data protection laws.
  • Coordinate and drive cross-stakeholder alignment on privacy and data protection matters.
  • Develop and maintain privacy compliance documentation, including privacy notices, consent statements, and data retention schedules.
  • Provide legal support in drafting, reviewing, and negotiating Data Processing Agreements, Business Associate Agreements, and other commercial agreements.
  • Collaborate with internal teams on vendor management and maintenance of subprocessors.
  • Support the development and delivery of privacy training and communications to increase employee understanding of company privacy policies and data handling practices.
  • Stay abreast of existing and emerging US and global data privacy laws and advise on compliance matters.
Requirements:
  • Extensive knowledge and understanding of privacy law, including US and European data protection law.
  • Experience providing pragmatic and actionable advice to internal clients on legal risks.
  • Strong business judgment, flexibility, and adaptability to manage multiple wide-ranging matters and conflicting deadlines.
  • Excellent organizational, analytical, and communication skills to express complex legal matters in clear, concise language.
  • 6+ years of legal experience in a law firm and in-house legal department, with a track record of providing practical business-friendly advice on privacy and data protection issues.
  • J.D. degree and an active membership in at least one U.S. state bar.
  • CIPP/US or CIPP/EU certification preferred.
What We Offer:

At Backblaze, we offer a competitive compensation package, including a base salary range of $175,000 to $210,000, as well as a comprehensive benefits package, including 100% healthcare for family, dental and vision plan, and a generous stipend for personal workstation setup.
