Job Summary

As a Drainage System Installation and Maintenance Specialist with Pulaski County, you will be responsible for the installation and maintenance of drainage systems within the county. This includes directing a crew involved with installation and repair of drainage pipes and ditches, determining pipe size and ditch size to allow proper water flow, and clearing drainage ditches and other water flow areas by removing brush, mud, beaver dams, and other debris.

Essential Job Functions
  • Completes work orders for identified drainage maintenance needs.
  • Directs a crew involved with installation and repair of drainage pipes and ditches determining pipe size and ditch size to allow proper water flow.
  • Uses a surveying level and rod to shoot grade for use in the determination of drainage pipe size.
  • Clears drainage ditches and other water flow areas by removing brush, mud, beaver dams, and other debris.
  • Cleans drainage ditches with front-end loaders.
  • Installs dry hydrants into rural ponds and other water sources under the direction of the Soil Conservation Agency.
  • Supervises a work crew involved with drainage maintenance and right-of-way clearing ensuring work standards are met and safety procedures are followed involving equipment usage and traffic control.
  • Maintains records of work completed, number of machine-hours, location of the job, and staff involved with completion.
  • Inspects and maintains all vehicles and equipment used by crews.
  • Obtains utility line location prior to digging ditches and cross-drain installation.
Secondary Duties and Responsibilities
  • Performs other related duties as required.
Personnel Supervised

Provides lead supervision to a crew of fifteen including Senior Equipment Operators, Heavy Equipment Operators, Equipment Operators, and Laborers.

Working Conditions

Duties are performed in an outdoor environment with frequent exposure to undesirable weather conditions. Careful attention must be exercised with the operation of equipment and the directing of traffic to reduce exposure to injuries. Occasional evening and weekend work is required during inclement weather and other emergencies.

Minimum Qualifications
  • Must possess a valid Arkansas Commercial Driver's License (CDL), Class A, or be able to obtain one with six months of employment.
  • Employment is contingent upon the successful completion of a pre-employment job-related physical and a motor vehicle report.
  • In addition to pre-employment checks, employees who operate county vehicles are required to undergo an annual motor vehicle report.
  • Subject to pre-employment and random drug and alcohol testing in compliance with the regulations of the US Department of Transportation.
  • Regular and reliable attendance is an essential function of this position.
