Description of Work

Salary Grade: Grade 16

The District Court 35, serving Watauga County, is seeking a qualified individual to fulfill administrative and case management responsibilities for the District Court Judges. This role encompasses all five counties in the district, including Avery, Madison, Mitchell, Watauga, and Yancey counties.

Key Responsibilities:
  • Draft and prepare various documents, including correspondence, reports, and legal papers.
  • Monitor case statuses, generate and disseminate periodic reports, and respond to inquiries regarding case progress.
  • Coordinate scheduling, resolve conflicts, and prepare court calendars.
  • Manage communications by screening calls and visitors, providing information, and addressing inquiries.
  • Organize and route mail, including electronic communications, based on content.
  • Maintain records by copying, filing, and retrieving materials, along with performing follow-ups.
  • Order and manage office supplies and equipment.
  • Compile continuing education reports and process travel reimbursement requests.
  • Participate in committees and attend meetings as assigned.
  • Perform additional duties as directed by the Court Manager or Chief District Court Judge.
This position reports to the Court Manager. Standard work hours are Monday to Friday, from 8:00 AM to 5:00 PM.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

Knowledge of: court systems and legal office practices and procedures.

Skills in: case management, organizational tasks, data entry with precision, and proficiency in Microsoft Word, Excel, and Outlook.

Ability to: articulate office and court procedures to the public; analyze and interpret information accurately; work independently on special court programs; utilize proper spelling and grammar; collaborate effectively with others; communicate in a language other than English; and manage tasks within specified deadlines.

Minimum Education and Experience Requirements:

Graduation from a four-year college or university with a degree in court administration, criminal justice, public administration, business, or a related field, along with one year of experience in the court system to develop the necessary knowledge, skills, and abilities for the role; or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
