Job Overview

Position Summary

The Automotive Service Consultant is responsible for welcoming clients, understanding their vehicle concerns, and determining the necessary services required. This role involves preparing service orders and communicating with customers regarding any additional repairs needed beyond the initial request. The consultant also informs clients about other available services.

Key Responsibilities

  • Guides customers on essential maintenance services.
  • Diagnoses mechanical issues through customer interaction or visual inspections.
  • Discusses inspection findings with clients, recommends necessary repairs, and generates work orders.
  • Creates detailed repair orders that outline time, costs, and labor estimates.
  • Documents customer concerns on repair orders to assist technicians in identifying issues.
  • Clarifies performed services and associated charges to customers.
  • Addresses customer complaints effectively.
  • Schedules service appointments efficiently.
  • Collects customer and vehicle information prior to service when feasible.
  • Welcomes customers promptly and gathers vehicle details.
  • Conducts test drives with customers as needed to verify issues or refer to a technician.
  • Reviews service history, inspects vehicles, and suggests additional services as required.
  • Informs customers about vehicle care and the importance of adhering to manufacturer maintenance guidelines.
  • Provides accurate written estimates for labor and parts.
  • Establishes and communicates promised service times, coordinating with dispatch as necessary.
  • Secures customer signatures on repair orders and provides copies for their records.
  • Determines payment methods and obtains necessary credit approvals.
  • Informs dispatch of incoming service requests.
  • Monitors repair progress throughout the day, updating customers on any changes to estimates or timelines, and securing authorization for additional work.
  • Implements and maintains a service marketing strategy.
  • Reviews completed repair orders to ensure all work is finalized and any additional authorizations are documented.
  • Ensures vehicles are parked in designated areas, secured, and that keys are stored appropriately.
  • Keeps service department documentation, pricing guides, and menus current.
  • Implements quality control measures to minimize repeat issues.
  • Maintains high standards of customer satisfaction.
  • Handles phone inquiries regarding appointments and ongoing work.
  • Inspects vehicles for bodywork needs, informing customers and providing estimates when necessary.
  • Maintains a professional appearance and a clean work environment.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.

Qualifications

Education and Experience

  • Associate's degree or equivalent from a two-year college or technical school; or six months to one year of related experience and/or training; or a combination of education and experience.
  • Bachelor's degree from a four-year college or university; or one to two years of related experience and/or training; or a combination of education and experience.
  • Two to four years of related experience and/or training; or a combination of education and experience.

Language Proficiency

  • Ability to read and interpret documents such as safety rules and operating instructions. Ability to write routine reports and correspondence. Ability to effectively communicate with groups of customers or employees.
  • Ability to analyze and interpret business publications, professional journals, and technical procedures. Ability to write reports and business correspondence.

Mathematical Skills

  • Ability to perform basic arithmetic operations and interpret data.
  • Ability to calculate figures such as discounts and percentages, and apply basic algebra and geometry concepts.

Reasoning Skills

  • Ability to apply common sense to follow instructions provided in various formats.
  • Ability to solve practical problems and interpret a variety of instructions.
  • Ability to define problems, gather data, and draw valid conclusions.

Certifications and Licenses

  • Automotive Service Excellence (ASE) Certifications.
  • Manufacturer Training.
  • Valid Driver's License.
