Position Overview
As a Mechanical Systems Engineer, you will be primarily responsible for executing comprehensive designs for both small and large mechanical engineering projects, utilizing your theoretical knowledge and practical design skills under general supervision.
Your key responsibilities will include:
- Understanding and applying departmental design and drafting standards.
- Familiarizing yourself with project scope, specifications, and design criteria upon assignment to a project team.
- Providing on-site support during project startup phases.
- Conducting engineering tasks such as stress analysis, creating construction specifications, and preparing material procurement specifications.
- Developing conceptual layouts and cost assessments to identify the most efficient solutions for engineering challenges.
- Producing preliminary designs and material take-offs suitable for project estimates.
- Creating detailed design calculations and sketches for construction materials, ensuring they are organized for efficient review and use by drafting teams.
- Assisting the drafting team in resolving layout and detailing issues.
- Collaborating with design leaders from various disciplines to ensure seamless information flow for timely project completion.
- Reviewing vendor and discipline drawings for mechanical accuracy.
- Designing with an emphasis on efficient use of construction materials and client satisfaction.
- Verifying calculations performed by peers to ensure compliance with codes, specifications, and best engineering practices.
- Advising senior engineers on identified design or scope changes.
- Supporting the assembly of scopes, drawings, and specifications for procurement inquiries.
- Developing construction specifications and reviewing fabrication drawings for adherence to engineering standards.
- Conducting fieldwork to gather necessary data and provide construction support.
- Offering technical guidance to junior drafting and engineering staff.
- Applying advanced engineering techniques to complex design challenges.
- Creating small work-sharing packages for interoffice collaboration.
Qualifications
Education:
A Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Mechanical Engineering from an accredited institution is required.
Registration:
Professional Engineering registration is highly preferred.
Experience:
This role requires a minimum of 5 years of relevant industrial experience in mechanical engineering, including:
- Familiarity with design standards and codes.
- Knowledge and specification of piping materials.
- Experience in sizing piping systems and conducting flexibility and stress analysis.
- Proficiency in manual valve sizing and application of piping supports.
- Understanding of safety valves and devices for maintaining mechanical integrity.
- Estimating construction quantities from conceptual designs.
- Coordination with other disciplines to ensure cohesive design efforts.
- Proficiency in Microsoft Word, Excel, and Outlook.
- Strong verbal and written communication skills.
- Effective presentation abilities and virtual team collaboration skills.
Physical Requirements:
Ability to sit, stand, or walk for extended periods.
