Role Overview:
Functions as the assistant to the surgeon, working directly under their supervision throughout surgical procedures. Collaborates with the nursing staff, surgeon, anesthesiologist, and/or CRNA in providing care to patients during the preoperative, intraoperative, and postoperative phases.

Minimum Qualifications:
Education, Certification, and/or Licensure:
  • Graduation from an accredited surgical technology program, recognized by CAAHEP (Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Programs).
  • Current Certified Surgical Technologist (CST) credential.
  • Current Certified Surgical First Assistant (CSFA) credential.
  • Basic Life Support (BLS) Certification must be obtained within 30 days of hire.
Experience:
  • A minimum of two (2) years of progressive clinical scrub experience in a CST role.

Preferred Qualifications:
Education, Certification, and/or Licensure:
  • Recommendations from three (3) multi-specialty surgeons to validate skill competency.

Core Responsibilities:

  • Perform technical skills necessary to prepare for surgical procedures.
  • Assist other perioperative team members in the care of surgical patients.
  • Provide direct patient care, identifying and addressing patient needs under the supervision of a registered nurse.
  • Assist the surgeon in the perioperative care of patients as directed.
  • Assess patient needs related to specific surgical procedures and gather necessary supplies and equipment.
  • Deliver age-appropriate care that respects patients' cultural, spiritual, and psychosocial needs.
  • Promote a safe environment conducive to patient well-being, observing for potential complications and reporting findings to the Registered Nurse.
  • May assist in scheduling operating room cases, recording information, and updating surgeon preference cards using the information management system.

Central Reprocessing Functions:

Involves decontamination of instruments, preparation for sterilization, and maintaining records for all equipment in accordance with established policies and procedures.


  • Utilize proper patient positioning, ensuring comfort and safety.
  • Provide visualization of the operative site through appropriate placement and securement of retractors, packing, and suctioning.
  • Employ techniques for hemostasis and assist with closure of body planes.
  • Select and apply appropriate wound dressings.
  • Assist in securing drainage systems to tissues.

  • Capable of prolonged periods of standing and walking.
  • Ability to lift up to 40 pounds and push/pull heavy carts.
  • Possess visual, hearing, and oral acuity along with manual dexterity and technical ability.
  • Ability to wear personal protective equipment for extended periods.
