Position Title:

Arborist II (May underfill at level I)

Job Overview:

This role involves executing specialized tasks essential for the effective planting, upkeep, removal, and provision of emergency services related to trees and other vegetation on properties managed by Salt Lake City Corporation.

Key Responsibilities:

  • May serve as a lead worker overseeing full-time and/or seasonal staff as required by work assignments, including training personnel for safe job performance.
  • Identifies and applies suitable techniques to ensure effective planting, maintenance, removal, and emergency services for trees, shrubs, and other vegetation on properties managed by Salt Lake City Corporation, encompassing tree pruning, spraying, removal, planting, stump grinding, and emergency service delivery.
  • Operates various specialized equipment, including aerial lifts, stump cutters, chainsaws, spraying devices, and various trucks, loaders, backhoes, tree spades, and trailers as necessary.
  • Adheres to safe working practices as outlined in the American National Standards for Arboricultural Operations ANSI Z or the latest approved revision.
  • Provides recommendations to the crew supervisor regarding operational processes, equipment requirements, technical information, tree conditions, and customer inquiries.
  • Under the direct supervision of an Arborist III, Urban Forestry Field Supervisor, or City Forester, performs tasks at heights exceeding 100 feet by manually climbing trees.
  • Utilizes a computer to input, update, and finalize service requests, work orders, and tree inventory records.
  • Performs related duties as necessary.

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Three years of experience as part of a tree maintenance crew. Three years of related tree care experience may be substituted. At least six months of experience climbing trees. Ability to read, write, and follow both verbal and written instructions.
  • Knowledge of a wide variety of trees and the proper methods, techniques, and practices used in the tree care industry for their planting, maintenance, removal, and emergency services.
  • Familiarity with tree industry personal protective equipment, climbing gear and hardware, rigging tools, ropes, knots, bends, and hitches.
  • Arborist Certification by the International Society of Arboriculture (ISA) must be obtained within 12 months of hire.
  • Ability to supervise and communicate effectively with individuals from diverse backgrounds.
  • Possession of a valid Utah Commercial Driver's License (CDL) class A with airbrake and combination endorsements or the ability to obtain it within 6 months.
  • Ability to acquire flagging certification within 6 months of hire.
  • Ability to obtain First Aid/CPR certification within 6 months of hire.

Working Conditions:

  • Involves strenuous physical labor with risks of heat exhaustion, falls from heights, electrocution from electrical hazards, being struck by falling objects, and injury from power equipment usage. Regularly works with medium to heavy weights, frequently pushing, pulling, or lifting heavy items. Continuous exposure to heights above 100 feet, extreme weather conditions year-round, as well as fumes, noise, dust, grease, and electrical hazards. The risk of bodily injury is considerable under normal conditions.
  • Occasional exposure to stressful situations due to human behavior.
  • Irregular and extended working hours may be required during peak seasons and emergency situations.
