Position Overview: The primary objective of this role is to support TRIO participants in enhancing their academic capabilities, leadership skills, and career trajectories. This position will also provide administrative assistance as required to the TRIO Student Support Services Program, including database management, handling confidential files, and aiding in evaluation and reporting tasks. Key responsibilities include delivering direct TRIO SSS services to participants, assisting with program workshops, cultural enrichment initiatives, and career exploration activities.

Core Responsibilities:

35% Maintain consistent communication with an assigned group of TRIO SSS students, offering support across the five mandated services from the U.S. Department of Education.

20% Provide guidance and advice to TRIO SSS students regarding leadership development and career planning.

20% Assist project staff with administrative tasks as needed.

10% Help in organizing and executing TRIO SSS sponsored workshops.

5% Prepare and submit documentation for monthly and annual reporting.

5% Assist the TRIO Director with the selection and intake of program participants.

5% Manage databases and files (both electronic and physical).

Key Performance Indicators:

Timeliness in communication and follow-up with TRIO participants.

Retention and graduation rates of TRIO participants each semester.

Achievement of the objectives set forth by the TRIO SSS Program as sanctioned by the U.S. Department of Education.

Qualifications:

Bachelor’s Degree in Education, Leadership, Counseling, Communications, or a related field.

A minimum of 2 years of experience in a higher education environment is required, preferably in TRIO or similar outreach programs, with knowledge of financial aid, scholarships, transfer programs, and academic advising, as well as proficiency in Microsoft Office and an understanding of diverse populations.

Part-time experience is calculated at 50% of full-time experience.

Impact of Role: This position operates under the goals of the federal TRIO SSS grant funded by the U.S. Department of Education. The ability to effectively serve the target population of first-generation, low-income, and disabled students is crucial for increasing retention and graduation rates, which is vital for the success of the TRIO SSS Program. Failure to meet grant objectives may result in funding loss, affecting multiple departments within the college.

Accuracy and Responsibility: Maintaining precise student information for the Annual Performance Report submitted to the U.S. Department of Education requires meticulous attention to detail. Errors may significantly impact future funding for the TRIO SSS Program. Miscommunication with students and TRIO SSS staff can lead to misunderstandings and anxiety.

Financial Accountability: Efficient use of office resources for job-related tasks is essential to ensure the program operates effectively with minimal costs and resource waste.

Budgetary Responsibilities: This role involves purchasing supplies, subject to approval by the Project Director. Responsibilities include completing requisitions, processing invoices, and ensuring documentation of all purchases aligns with U.S. Department of Education and Pellissippi State Community College guidelines. This position does not hold signing authority.

Decision-Making Authority: The position may independently make decisions regarding issues that arise within its scope. For matters outside this scope, a referral to the TRIO Director is required.

Nature of Interactions: Interactions, both internal and external, aim to provide and gather information, facilitate understanding, and negotiate resolutions. Contacts include faculty and staff at PSCC, non-profit organizations assisting TRIO participants, four-year post-secondary institutions, and other TRIO professionals.

Physical Requirements: The role primarily involves desk work, with some walking and standing. It may require lifting, climbing, standing, kneeling, pushing, stooping, reaching, and manual dexterity. Travel to other campuses may be necessary, as well as setting up display tables at campus and community events.

Health Risks: Exposure to germs and bacteria that may lead to colds, flu, COVID-19, and other illnesses is a significant concern in this position.
