Fleet Mechanic - Journey Level Job Description

Key Responsibilities:
  • Maintain, inspect, and repair City vehicles and equipment
  • Perform complex diagnostic procedures, including computer scanning and use of service manuals and schematics for electrical and mechanical troubleshooting
  • Repair and maintain fuel systems, including fuel injection systems, pumps, filters, etc.
  • Repair and maintain exhaust emissions systems on both gasoline and diesel vehicles
  • Disassemble, repair, and reassemble engines and transmissions
  • Maintain and repair drive train components, including differentials, axles, drive shafts, bearings, etc.
  • Services pumps, ignition systems, clutches, cooling systems, HVAC, accessories, etc.
  • Diagnose and repair hydraulic systems
  • Oversee and perform emergency field repairs and service, utilizing service trucks and other equipment
  • Maintain and repair various types of equipment, large and small, including medium and heavy trucks, Jet/Vac truck, garbage trucks, grader, sweepers, loaders, excavator, skid excavators, skid loaders, trailers, power trucks, spool trailers, cable pullers, dump trucks, tractors, sludge dredge, backhoes, snow removal equipment, fire and emergency response vehicles
Requirements:
  • Graduation from high school or GED, plus completion of a two (2) year apprentice or vocational program in automotive and/or heavy equipment service and repair
  • Four (4) years of progressively responsible experience in a field directly related to above duties
  • OR an equivalent combination of education and experience
  • Considerable knowledge of design, adjustment, operation, maintenance, and repair of diversified mechanical, electrical and hydraulic equipment
  • Working knowledge of computer applications, including word processing, spreadsheet and database programs
  • Journey level skill in the use of mechanical tools, materials, fabrication, and testing equipment
  • Considerable skill in the operation of vehicles and equipment
Preferred Qualifications:
  • ASE certified truck and/or auto mechanic with successful completion of the ASE test modules A4, A5, A6, A8 or T2, T4 and T7
  • Valid Idaho CDL Class B with hazard and tanker endorsements
Work Environment:

This position normally works in a safe, climate-controlled environment. Tasks require a variety of physical activities, generally involving muscular strain, such as walking, standing, stooping, sitting, reaching and lifting. Lifting requirements require frequent lifting up to 25 pounds, occasional lifting up to 50 pounds, and infrequent lifting up to 100 pounds.
