Job Summary

We are seeking a highly skilled and experienced Crew Supervisor to join our Public Works team in the Town of Lexington, Massachusetts. As a key member of our team, you will be responsible for supervising and assisting in the installation and maintenance of roads, curbing, catch basins, water services, sewer connections, water mains, water meters, hydrants, drain connections, laying of pipe, patch work, cement work, signs, and other general construction and maintenance work.

Key Responsibilities
  • Supervise and assist in the repair of pipe leaks, sewer stoppages, and minor repairs to equipment.
  • Supervise and assist in the care of cemeteries, parks, pools, playgrounds, playing fields, and other public areas.
  • Supervise and assist in snow removal operations.
  • Assist in the evaluation process for crew members.
  • Provide effective and efficient customer service and promote and maintain responsive community relations.
  • Follow safe work practices.
  • Perform related duties as assigned.
Requirements
  • Graduation from high school (or GED equivalent) plus additional technical or specialized training, including or supplemented by at least 4 years of public works experience in maintenance and repairs, commercial or residential construction, mechanical maintenance and repair, or other field related to assigned division and activities.
  • Knowledge of departmental policies, procedures, and practices.
  • Knowledge of operational, maintenance, and repair activities required for assigned area.
  • Knowledge of applicable rules, regulations, codes, ordinances, and safety standards that govern the performance of the duties being performed.
  • Knowledge of occupational hazards and the methods and techniques used to avoid or minimize risks.
  • Ability to develop and administer work plans, policies, and procedures.
  • Ability to understand and follow oral and written instructions.
  • Ability to communicate clearly and concisely.
  • Ability to supervise the work of others.
  • Ability to perform light to heavy physical tasks under varying weather conditions.
  • Ability to operate vehicles, tools, and equipment relevant to assigned operations.
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with supervisors, coworkers, contractors, residents, and the general public.
  • Skill in identifying and preventing work hazards.
  • Skill in the operation of heavy trucks, vehicles, equipment, machinery, and tools used in assigned operations.
Physical Demands
  • Work is performed mostly outdoors; hand-eye coordination is necessary to operate computers and various types of tools, equipment, and machinery.
  • Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, prolonged visual concentration, and the ability to adjust focus.
  • While performing the duties of this job, the employee is frequently required to sit, stand, walk, talk, and hear; use hands and fingers to handle, feel, or operate objects, tools, or controls, and reach with hands and arms.
  • The employee is frequently required to climb, balance, stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl.
  • The employee is frequently exposed to adverse weather conditions, including extreme heat, cold, wetness, and humidity, and to other unpleasant conditions such as dim lighting, dust, odors, noise, vibration, toxic agents, electrical currents, heavy machinery, smoke, and disease.
  • The employee may work in hazardous, emergency, and/or stressful situations and conditions.
  • The employee must frequently lift and/or move up in excess of 50 pounds.
