Position Overview:
This role is eligible for the Education Debt Reduction Program (EDRP), a reimbursement initiative for student loan payments.

To qualify, candidates must fulfill specific individual eligibility criteria as per VHA policy and submit their EDRP application within four months of their appointment.

Approval of the program, the awarded amount (up to $200,000), and the eligibility duration (ranging from one to five years) will be determined by the VHA Education Loan Repayment Services program office following a thorough review of the EDRP application.

Key Responsibilities:
The primary objective of this position is to engage in a developmental capacity, performing tasks or limited phases of broader assignments aimed at providing the employee with experience in the clinical application of scientific principles and theories in diagnostic testing and quality assurance. This role is designed to enable technologists to acquire a diverse range of advanced skills and techniques.

Full Performance Level:
The full performance level for a Clinical Laboratory Technologist is classified as GS-9. A recruitment incentive may be authorized for highly qualified candidates.

GS-07 Responsibilities:
As a Clinical Laboratory Technologist at the GS-7 level, the individual serves in an entry-level career development position under close supervision.

Key duties include:

  • Conducting a wide array of laboratory procedures encompassing pre-analytic, analytic, and post-analytic processes.
  • Performing phlebotomy procedures alongside advanced and complex laboratory tasks.
  • Identifying deviations from expected results, analyzing issues, and implementing solutions based on scientific principles.
  • Evaluating and resolving problems related to the collection and processing of biological specimens for analysis.
  • Documenting quality control and assurance activities and corrective measures related to test performance.

GS-09 Responsibilities:
At the GS-9 level, the Clinical Laboratory Technologist is responsible for developing, performing, evaluating, interpreting, correlating, and validating the accuracy of laboratory procedures and results.

Responsibilities include:

  • Conducting a comprehensive range of laboratory procedures, including pre-analytic, analytic, and post-analytic processes.
  • Maintaining and documenting the optimal functioning of laboratory equipment, including calibration and preventive maintenance.
  • Performing quality control and assurance activities and implementing corrective actions.
  • Adhering to bio-safety and bio-security regulations in the workplace.
  • Evaluating and integrating new techniques and procedures within the laboratory.

Work Schedule:
Monday to Friday, with mid-shift hours and rotating weekends and holidays.
Telework:
This position does not offer telework options.
Conditions of Employment:

Proficiency in written and spoken English is required.


Qualifications:
Basic Requirements:
  • U.S. Citizenship.
  • A bachelor's degree in medical laboratory science or a related field.
  • Completion of an accredited medical technology clinical practice program.

Certification:
Candidates must possess the appropriate certification as a Medical Technologist (MT), Medical Laboratory Scientist (MLS), or Clinical Laboratory Scientist (CLS) from recognized certification bodies.

Physical Requirements:
This role may involve light lifting, standing, and walking for extended periods.
