Operating Room Nurse Residency Program

This comprehensive nurse residency program is designed to prepare individuals for a position as an operating room staff nurse and provide the foundation needed to pass the Association of periOperative Registered Nurses (AORN) certification program. The program includes six months of online didactic training followed by a 3-5 month clinical orientation. Upon completion, participants will be offered a full-time position at either Manchester Memorial Hospital or Rockville General Hospital, with a commitment to the operating room for two years.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Coordinate patient care with the interdisciplinary team to ensure seamless delivery of care.
  • Effectively communicate patient's clinical condition to ensure accurate and timely interventions.
  • Perform population-specific comprehensive assessments to identify individual patient needs.
  • Follow medication administration policies to ensure patient safety.
  • Document nursing process and responses to care to maintain accurate patient records.
  • Demonstrate flexibility and sound judgment in priority setting to ensure efficient care delivery.
  • Pursue personal and professional growth and development to enhance nursing practice.
  • Provide age-appropriate care to patients to ensure individualized care.
  • Prepare surgical room and assist with procedures to ensure smooth surgical processes.
  • Handle and process specimens accurately to ensure timely diagnosis and treatment.
  • Function effectively in the scrub role to ensure safe and efficient surgical care.

Requirements:

  • Graduate of an accredited school of Nursing with a strong foundation in nursing principles and practices.
  • Current Registered Nurse license in the State of Connecticut with a commitment to ongoing professional development.
  • Certification in Cardio Pulmonary Resuscitation (CPR) to ensure patient safety.
  • Ability to successfully complete the AORN Periop 101 course work within six months to enhance nursing knowledge and skills.
  • Pass the Certified Registered Operating Nurse (CNOR) certification exam within six months from residency completion to demonstrate expertise in operating room nursing.
  • Good communication skills in English, both verbally and in writing, to ensure effective communication with patients, families, and healthcare teams.
