Job Summary

We are seeking a skilled Public Works Solid Waste Maintenance Worker to join our team in Charlotte County, FL. As a key member of our Public Works department, you will be responsible for performing general labor tasks in roadway drainage construction, asphalt placement, and other public works maintenance activities.

Key Responsibilities
  • Perform routine work assisting in building, rebuilding, and repairing manholes, catch basins, sand traps, sidewalks, curbs, and gutters.
  • Perform general labor in street construction and maintenance work, including breaking pavement, pouring and shoveling asphalt and concrete, digging holes, laying sod, and assisting in carpentry, painting, and other incidental construction work.
  • Clean streets and gutters, including cleaning bushes from roadside, cutting branches, and picking up fallen tree limbs, collecting trash and other refuse, and loading into a truck.
  • Lay pipes and operate pipe handling equipment, dig and backfill trenches, lay sewer pipes, and clean drainage ditches.
  • Utilize safety equipment, monitor work environment, and direct traffic to ensure safety of employees and other individuals.
  • Load and unload materials, supplies, or equipment.
  • Operate hand and power tools, standard maintenance equipment, lawn mowers, and other small power equipment, and County vehicles as required.
  • Provide exceptional customer assistance, problem-solving, and/or complaint resolution by all forms of communication.
Requirements
  • High school diploma or equivalent.
  • One (1) year of experience that shows an ability to maintain steady employment in any field.
  • Must maintain a valid driver's license.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Knowledge of departmental policies, plans, and procedures.
  • Knowledge of modern office practices, plans, and procedures.
  • Knowledge of Microsoft Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and other job-related computer programs and software applications.
  • Skill in effective communication, both orally and in writing.
  • Skill in prioritizing and organizing work.
  • Skill in the use of office equipment such as a computer, multi-line telephone system, scanner, fax machine, and copier.
  • Ability to operate standard equipment and hand tools used in the area of assignment.
  • Ability to follow written and oral instructions.
  • Ability to perform manual labor, sometimes under unfavorable weather conditions.
  • Ability to operate a motor vehicle.
  • Ability to make recommendations and to use resourcefulness and tact in solving new problems.
  • Ability to provide internal/external guidance and customer assistance via all forms of communication.
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with managers, service providers, other employees, and the general public.
