Job Summary

We are seeking an experienced Assistant Structural Engineer to join our team at Burns & McDonnell. The successful candidate will work under the supervision of a licensed professional engineer to assist project teams in creating world-class designs for new projects, alterations, and redevelopments.

Key Responsibilities
  • Assist project teams in creating structural designs for various projects, including power, process, corporate, healthcare, pipeline, airports, institutional, industrial, manufacturing, government, and military facilities.
  • Work with project teams throughout the design and construction process, adapting structural plans according to budget constraints, design factors, or client needs.
  • Assist in the structural design of projects from the conceptual phase through design completion.
  • Modify and review production drawings for various projects, including power plants, utility distribution systems, process facilities, industrial facilities, healthcare facilities, airports, educational institutions, commercial, and governmental and military facilities.
  • Design structural components for project needs and requirements set forth by project managers.
  • Apply basic knowledge of commonly used structural engineering/design concepts, principles, practices, codes, and procedures within the structural engineering services industry.
  • Correct and update drawings provided by senior engineers using multiple CAD-related software.
  • Assist with client presentations, shop drawing review, and contract administration for the design of power, process, pipeline, industrial, healthcare, airports, educational institutions, commercial, and governmental and military facilities.
  • Perform field inspections, measurements, or calculations for public and private clients.
Requirements
  • Bachelor's degree in Structural Engineering or a related degree from an ABET-accredited program.
  • Required or Bachelor's degree in Structural or related Engineering Technology from an ABET-accredited program and successful completion of the Fundamentals of Engineering (FE) exam.
  • Prior internship and/or related consulting experience preferred.
  • Basic knowledge in standard structural engineering techniques, principles, and procedures.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
  • Ability to work methodically and analytically in a quantitative problem-solving environment and demonstrated critical thinking skills.
  • Proficient computer skills, including Microsoft Office Suite.
  • Basic computer skills include structural analysis programs (e.g., RISA), AutoCAD, and BIM (e.g., Revit and Tekla) preferred.
  • Strong attention to detail, facilitation, team building, collaboration, organization, and problem-solving skills.
  • Demonstrated leadership skills.
  • Engineers in Training (EIT) Certification preferred.
Work Environment

This is a full-time position with 25% travel required.
