Job Overview

POSITION SUMMARY

Under the guidance of a licensed pharmacist, the Pharmaceutical Care Technician is responsible for assisting in the preparation and compounding of medication orders while ensuring compliance with local pharmacy regulations. This role also involves maintaining cleanliness and organization within the pharmacy workspace.

QUALIFICATIONS

  1. Education:
  2. High school diploma or equivalent.
  3. Preferred: Completion of a pharmacy technician training program, resulting in an Associate of Arts Degree, Associate of Science Degree, or a Certificate of Completion.
  4. Must have passed the National Pharmacy Certified Technician (CpHt) examination.
  5. Completion of an aseptic technique course recognized by the American Society of Hospital Pharmacists (ASHP) or equivalent.
  6. Experience:
  7. A minimum of six months of experience as a hospital pharmacy technician or in a related field, demonstrating a solid understanding of pharmacy protocols; or
  8. A minimum of six months of experience as a pharmacy technician specifically in IV preparation.
  9. Completion of employer-sanctioned training in hazardous chemical handling and waste disposal.
  10. Employment Status:
  11. Full-time position, requiring 40 hours per week, Monday through Friday.
  12. Work schedule to be established by the supervising pharmacist.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES

1. Operate under the direct oversight of a registered pharmacist, executing tasks approved by the State Board of Pharmacy.

2. Maintain appropriate inventory levels of pharmaceutical products and ancillary equipment.

3. Conduct monthly checks of all medications for expiration dates or upon restocking.

4. Provide the pharmacist with a monthly report of expired medications.

5. Ensure proper maintenance and documentation of pharmacy-related equipment, including compounding devices.

6. Adhere to cleaning protocols for the pharmacy and compounding areas as per established policies.

7. Assist the pharmacist in preparing prescriptions for filling, verifying compounding records, gathering necessary pharmaceuticals, and staging products for pharmacist review.

8. Maintain comprehensive records of compounding activities, prescription logs, and any other relevant documentation as directed by the Pharmacy Director.

9. Execute additional tasks as assigned by the pharmacist or Pharmacy Director, in accordance with State Board of Pharmacy regulations.

10. Conduct aseptic validation testing procedures and maintain records of results as required by the Pharmacy Director.

11. Keep accurate compounding records and maintain a Quality Control notebook.

12. Perform daily temperature monitoring of refrigerators, freezers, and incubators, documenting findings appropriately.

13. Clean and calibrate IV pumps and poles following manufacturer specifications.

14. Participate in the Infection Control Program (IOP).
