About the Role

We are seeking an experienced Electrical Engineer to join our team at the Johns Hopkins Applied Physics Laboratory (APL). As an Electrical Engineer for Maritime Systems, you will play a critical role in the design, development, and testing of advanced maritime electrical systems.

Key Responsibilities
  • Design and develop complex electrical systems for maritime applications, including sensor systems and testbeds.
  • Apply innovative thinking to complex problems and assist in the brainstorming and development of new initiatives in maritime applications.
  • Develop and implement electrical schematics, circuit boards, and complex electrical systems, as well as custom sensor interfaces and associated signal conditioning, filtering, and data acquisition systems.
  • Support lab development and testing of electrical sensors, power control hardware, and distribution systems, as well as imaging systems using various test equipment.
  • Develop project plans and test plans, and conduct land and ocean-based field tests and demonstrations of advanced sensor systems to ensure that program objectives are satisfactorily addressed.
Requirements
  • Bachelor's degree in electrical engineering or a related technical field with 5+ years of demonstrated experience with relevant electrical systems in a professional environment.
  • Hands-on experience with prototype development, circuit design, debugging, PCB design, interfacing analog electronics to FPGAs and microcontrollers with serial protocols such as I2C/SPI/USB, system integration and test, developing data acquisition systems, power distribution systems, and similar tasks.
  • Detailed knowledge of how to use lab instruments and engineering software tools such as Altium, PSpice, and LabView for electrical design and development.
  • Proven ability to work both independently and as part of a multidisciplinary team and possess strong interpersonal, speaking, and technical writing skills to communicate effectively with staff and management at all levels.
  • Ability to obtain an Interim Secret level security clearance by start date and ultimately obtain a Top Secret level clearance.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Master's degree in electrical engineering or a closely related technical field.
  • 5+ years of relevant experience with moored and towed ocean systems, such as buoys, towed arrays, UUVs, and ROVs.
  • Experience with development and testing of towed or moored acoustic and non-acoustic sensor arrays or similar telemetry systems.
  • Experience with shipboard power systems, power filtering, or large battery-powered systems.
  • Experience with preamplifier design, switching power supplies vs. linear power regulators, AC and DC power supplies, low-noise power systems, and testing any of these systems.
