Position Description

The University of California is in search of a highly qualified and experienced Senior Hydrology Optimization Specialist to join our dynamic team. Under the guidance of the lead investigators, the successful applicant will engage in a range of technical evaluations to support project objectives. This includes the design and development of analytical algorithms and software tailored for optimizing water resource management.

The focus areas will encompass hydropower generation, environmental flow regulation, climate resilience strategies, and agricultural water demand management, addressing critical societal challenges. The ideal candidate will leverage the PyWR library, a Python-based tool for water resource engineering, to create hydro-economic models pertinent to agricultural practices under extreme climate conditions, particularly in California. Furthermore, the role involves stakeholder engagement to facilitate decision-making processes through analytical and visual outputs.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Develop and implement software solutions for hydropower optimization utilizing PyWR, factoring in water flow dynamics, energy production, and ecological impacts.
  • Create hydro-economic models to simulate agricultural water usage under climate variability.
  • Collaborate with interdisciplinary teams to ascertain project specifications and deliver software solutions that align with stakeholder needs.
  • Conduct hydrological and hydraulic assessments, performing simulations to enhance hydropower system efficacy.
  • Establish and manage databases and data interfaces to underpin software applications.
  • Ensure software functionality across diverse operating systems and hardware configurations.
  • Produce and maintain comprehensive technical documentation, including user guides and code annotations.
  • Contribute to the drafting of research manuscripts for publication in peer-reviewed journals.
  • Work alongside quality assurance teams to guarantee software meets established quality and performance benchmarks.
  • Stay informed on industry advancements and emerging technologies, applying this knowledge to refine software solutions.
  • Provide mentorship to junior engineers, offering technical support and guidance.
  • Deliver engaging presentations tailored to various audiences, ensuring clarity and accessibility of information.
Qualifications

Basic Qualifications:
  • Ph.D. in Water Resources Engineering, Civil Engineering, or a related discipline.
  • A minimum of 5 years of experience in water resources engineering, particularly in hydropower and optimization.
Additional Qualifications:

Demonstrated expertise in PyWR, PYOMO libraries, and Python programming.

Comprehensive understanding of hydrology, hydraulics, and hydropower engineering, alongside optimization methodologies.

Exceptional problem-solving capabilities with a proven ability to work autonomously and collaboratively.

Strong written and verbal communication skills, with a notable record of academic publications.

Experience in database management and data analysis.

Thorough knowledge of software development best practices and testing protocols.

Familiarity with collaborative software development tools and version control systems, such as Git.

Proven ability to efficiently manage tasks with minimal supervision and consistently meet project deadlines.

Preferred Qualifications:
  • Experience with cloud-based platforms and containerization technologies.

  • Familiarity with Geographic Information Systems (GIS) and remote sensing technologies.
