Key Responsibilities:

The Poison Information Specialist is responsible for offering both online and telephonic consultations, assessing potential poisoning incidents, and providing treatment recommendations to the public, healthcare professionals, and physicians. This role serves as a vital resource for both the community and medical personnel, reporting directly to the Director of the Poison Control Center.

Primary Duties:
  • Respond to urgent toxicological inquiries via online platforms and phone calls.
  • Assess toxic hazards and initiate appropriate triage and management protocols.
  • Document all consultations accurately.
  • Provide toxicological guidance and resources to the public, health professionals, and media during chemical or environmental emergencies.
  • Educate healthcare providers and the public on recognizing toxidromes, diagnostic methods, prognosis, and management of poisoned patients.
  • Engage in the ongoing management of toxicological cases by analyzing laboratory and clinical data through follow-up communications.
  • Oversee and mentor Poison Information Providers.
  • Participate in accredited toxicology training programs and fulfill additional duties as assigned.

Qualifications:

Education:
A Bachelor's degree is required. Candidates must have graduated from an accredited nursing program (Bachelor of Science in Nursing preferred), an ACPE accredited pharmacy school (Doctor of Pharmacy preferred), or a medical school.

Experience:
A minimum of two years of relevant clinical experience is necessary. Candidates must hold a license to practice in Michigan as a registered nurse, registered pharmacist, physician's assistant, or physician (MD or DO). Certification as a Certified Specialist in Poison Information (CSPI) by the American Association of Poison Control Centers (AAPCC) is required or must be obtained within two years of employment, along with recertification as mandated by the AAPCC.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
  • General understanding of toxicology principles.
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills for effective interaction with healthcare professionals and the public.
  • Interpersonal skills to collaborate with diverse hospital staff, patients, and families.
  • Analytical skills to gather and interpret data accurately and promptly.
  • Proficiency in using computers and telecommunication systems.

Working Conditions:

This position is based in the Michigan Regional Poison Control Center, a 24-hour emergency call center. The role requires extended periods of sitting while utilizing a telephone headset and computer. Candidates must be able to navigate multiple software applications and monitor various screens simultaneously. Critical thinking and the ability to adapt quickly to changing situations are essential. Availability for weekends, evenings, nights, and holidays is required, and overtime may be necessary. This position is designated as essential personnel.
